About Esther Elena
Welcome and thank you for being here! I'm Esther Ruiz, a bilingual Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with over 15 years of experience helping children, adults, and couples navigate life's challenges. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Benedictine University and my Master's in Clinical Professional Psychology from Roosevelt University. My career has taken me through nonprofit organizations, DCFS, and Thriveworks, where I've had the privilege of supporting people from diverse backgrounds. I believe healing begins when you feel truly seen, heard, and safe enough to reconnect with the person you've always been.
My approach is warm, collaborative, and trauma-informed. I believe therapy is more than learning coping skills, it's understanding your story, breaking free from patterns that no longer serve you, and rediscovering the strength, clarity, and self-trust that have always been within you. We move at a pace that feels right for you!
Whatever brings you here, you don't have to carry it alone. My hope is that therapy becomes a place where you feel supported, understood, and empowered to become more fully yourself. When you're ready, I'd be honored to walk alongside you on that journey.

"As a bilingual therapist who values authenticity, cultural identity, and human connection, I strive to create a compassionate and collaborative space where clients feel deeply seen, understood, and empowered to reconnect with their strengths and create meaningful change."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I've always been drawn to understanding people beyond their struggles. Becoming a therapist wasn't just about choosing a career, it was about creating the kind of space where people feel genuinely seen, heard, and accepted. Throughout my life and career, I've witnessed how pain, trauma, and life's experiences can cause people to lose sight of who they are. What inspires me most is helping clients reconnect with themselves, recognize their resilience, and discover that healing is possible. It is a privilege to walk alongside people as they move from surviving to truly living, and I consider it an honor every time someone trusts me with their story.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I work best with clients who are ready to better understand themselves and create meaningful change, even if they're not sure where to begin. Many of the people I work with feel overwhelmed by anxiety, weighed down by trauma, disconnected in their relationships, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve them. I also enjoy working with individuals navigating life transitions, self-worth challenges, cultural and family dynamics, and couples looking to strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and deepen their connection. Whether you're seeking healing from the past or clarity about your future, I strive to create a space where you feel safe, supported, and empowered to reconnect with your authentic self.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
I don't believe therapy is one-size-fits-all because no two people have the same story. I take time to understand your experiences, strengths, values, and goals so we can create an approach that feels right for you. I integrate person-centered, trauma-informed, attachment-based, and cognitive behavioral techniques, adapting our work to your unique needs and pace. While we make space for life's difficult moments, I also believe there's room for laughter. When appropriate, I use humor to help clients feel at ease, build connection, and remind them that healing can include moments of lightness. My goal is to provide meaningful insight, practical tools, and a space where you feel safe enough to grow, heal, and reconnect with yourself.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
In our first session, my focus is on getting to know you! What brought you to therapy, what you’ve been carrying, and what you’re hoping to change or understand more deeply. There’s no pressure to have everything figured out. We’ll move at your pace, and you can share as much or as little as feels comfortable.
Early sessions are about building a foundation of trust and understanding. I take time to learn your story, your strengths, and the patterns that may be showing up in your life and relationships. Together, we begin to identify goals that feel meaningful and realistic for you, while also making space for what feels most important in the moment.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
One thing I wish all clients knew is that healing is not linear, and there is nothing wrong with you if it takes time. Growth often looks like small shifts, setbacks, and moments where things feel both better and harder at the same time. Therapy is not about becoming a different person..it’s about understanding yourself with more compassion, breaking patterns that no longer serve you, and slowly reconnecting with who you are underneath the pain and survival strategies.
You don’t have to be “ready” in the perfect way to begin. You just have to be willing to show up as you are, even if that means feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or stuck. In my experience, change happens in the moments where you feel safe enough to be honest, even about the parts of yourself you’ve been taught to hide. Healing is less about doing it perfectly and more about not having to do it alone.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
What informs my work most is my deep value for conexión, autenticidad, and cultural understanding. As a bilingual therapist, I hold close the importance of language, identidad, and lived experience in how we see ourselves and how we relate to others. I’ve seen how often people learn to hold everything in, be fuerte for everyone else, and live with this constant pressure of el "qué dirán" instead of honoring what they actually feel. My commitment is to create a space where you don’t have to live from that place...where you can let go of the pressure to please, perform, or esconderte, and instead show up as your full self, without judgement.
I also value transparency and humanidad in the therapy room. I don’t see myself as sitting above my clients, but as walking alongside them through their story. Therapy, for me, is a shared process where curiosity, compassion, and confianza guide the work.
Having worked in nonprofit settings, DCFS, and Thriveworks, I’ve witnessed the resilience people carry even in the most difficult circumstances. At my core, I believe people are doing the best they can with what they’ve gone through, and that healing becomes possible when they are met with understanding instead of judgment. That belief continues to shape how I show up in every session.
