Get to know Janet

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I became a therapist to assist people in healing their most deepest and vulnerable parts of themselves which can be painful and difficult to do. I see this as an opportunity to empower people during the harder times in life. I find fulfillment as I experience clients making a courageous choice to reach out to someone with more knowledge and an objective view to help you during this time in your life.

What types of clients do you work with best?

Some of the characteristics of previous clients who have benefited from my approaches have been, motivated to do homework, willing to be vulnerable, enjoys setting goals and attaining them, and including their spiritual life.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I get excited when a highly motivated person with many lifelong issues seeks me out to be their therapist. I get more energized while helping people holistically work with mind, body, and spirit. I feel successful when a client finds deeper issues to focus on as they are working on the goals they come in for. Clients often learn their anxiety or depression is triggered or caused by a larger issue in their life. I enjoy hearing how important pets are in client's lives.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

Seeking therapy should not be embarrassing, shaming, or a reason to devalue yourself. Instead seeking therapy is courageous and the best way to seek more life fulfillment. It will be the best use of your time in your entire life.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I like the hybrid opportunity. They are open to many of the types of clients I want and enjoy being a therapist too. I like the continued support, supervision, and collegial atmosphere.

What inspires you?

Experiencing the growth of clients while learning to fulfill their lives. Quotes of inspiring people and there are too many for me to remember so I write down many. One of my favorites is “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” Eleanore Roosevelt. I enjoy documentaries about people's lives and reading and listening to podcasts about people and history.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

To be welcomed with compassion, no judgment, and a really good listening ear that asks clarifying questions.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

To obtain some crucial life events from the client's life. Measure the intensity of their symptoms. Gather previous mental health treatment and what is remembered from that time that has been helpful or not helpful. Ask what questions they have about the therapeutic process. I begin to build a therapeutic rapport.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?

I can do it in person or telehealth. I do weekend days and weekday late evenings and early mornings. I am Caucasian and heterosexual. I have relatives and friends whose sexual orientation is homosexual or bisexual. I also from a young age had friends and extended family members of different cultures. I always enjoy learning about different cultures and countries.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

Spend time with family, read, watch documentaries, learn about dog breeds, and cook and bake.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

The first is my family roles of daughter, mother, and grandmother. Being a spiritual person. Continue growing in self-awareness, knowledge, and trying new activities.

Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?

I recently had a couple as a client who was dealing with infidelity. They came to realize they wanted the marriage to continue. As they worked on building trust they realized trust was lacking as well as emotional connection before the infidelity occurred and was a major reason for the infidelity to happen. After a year they felt they had built trust and communication in their marriage to stop couples therapy, but both of them planned on continuing individual therapy. Some of the tools I used with them were Gottman cards, the four horsemen for communication, Gottman book of "8 dates", the five love languages, filter questionnaire, CBT thought distortions, DBT coping skills, narrative therapy, individual self-care, and active listening.
