About Karen
Karen Coefield is a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 18 years of experience in the mental health field in a variety of settings. Her passion is working with young adults and adults dealing with life's transitions and challenges that pose barriers to their personal, professional, and relational goals while being mindful of the impact that culture, trauma, and other external factors play in these challenges. Karen specializes in anxiety, major life transitions, stress management, and mood disorders. Karen completed her Masters of Science in Professional Counseling at Georgia State University.
Karen has supported adults in various stages in life in breaking cycles that have kept them from moving forward and discovering new ways of thinking and being that align with their values, goals, and dreams. To do this, Karen utilizes approaches such as CBT, mindfulness, solution-focused therapy, person-centered therapy, and motivational interviewing.
We all have periods in our lives where we feel stuck. Karen will work with you to identify the thoughts, behaviors, and emotions that have you stuck and help you find new ways of engaging with your world so that you can move toward a healthier, more fulfilled life. She would be honored to join you on this journey if you would like to schedule an appointment.

"My goal as your therapist is to support you in facing, understanding, and coping with the behaviors, thought patterns, and emotional responses that contribute to feeling stuck in life or not becoming what you believe to be the best version of yourself. "

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I decided to become a counselor because I wanted to be one of the few people in this fast paced, performance driven world that wanted to slow down and take the time to truly listen to the person in front of me equipped with the tools to truly help and them to cope with the storms of life.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with young adults and adults who are striving for change, but may not know where to start or have made many attempts but can't seem to move forward. I also enjoy working with those facing life's transitions and stress, chosen or unchosen/ anticipated or or dreaded that leave you feeling overwhelmed.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to work with anyone who has taken that first step to reach out for help or who have doubts and fears about what a change may look like. Doing so shows an amazing amount of courage and is an act of self love and care that I can't help but to respect and honor.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish clients knew that you can come to therapy as you are. You don't have to have all the answers or know where to start. You don't have to hit rock bottom, or be at the end of your rope to seek help. Just come with curiosity, an openness to explore/ discuss the possibilities. You can even bring along a heathy dose of skepticism and see where the journey leads. Because therapy is just that, a journey.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose Thriveworks because I am able to focus on my clients and their needs without having to get involved in a lot of administrative tasks. Our time together can be focused on your goals and the work we do together to reach those goals. There are also many resources available to you the client and myself as your therapist to support us along the way.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by how resilient people are and the ability within each of us to bounce back, adapt, and overcome.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
During the first session, I will get to know a lot about you including your history, strengths, challenges, and expectations. By the end of the session we will come up with some goals and next steps and I will share ways in which I can support you in reaching those goals.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
At the end of the fist session, my hope is that we can begin the process of building our client/ therapist relationship, that you feel heard, and leave the session with some identified goals, and even some initial steps you can take before the following session to start moving towards your goals.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I am truly humbled by the fact that you have chosen me to join you on your journey and do not take that choice lightly. I don't know what has led you to reach out, but I look forward to learning more about you and your aspirations and being a source of support.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love music and comedy. I like to spend time outdoors and and reading. I also like exploring new places and foods.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I am a very reflective person. I like to do things that make me think or push me out of my mental comfort zone. I like to read and watch documentaries that show me a world or perspective I had not previously considered or known of.
