Get to know Gavin
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I worked with a social worker when I was younger when dealing with end of life issues for a family member. I was inspired by her compassion, passion, and genuine interest in helping the family through that difficult time.
What types of clients do you work with best?
Patients with anxiety, mood disorders in general, OCD, family and couples anxiety.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I specialized in geriatric population in school but love working with all populations.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
That everyone has inherent value and there is a way to move through everything we face.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I am looking to focus more on my clinical practice and build a clientele closer to home.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by clients that push their way through adversity. I am inspired by the MSD students that I had the honor to work with following that tragedy.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I want to get to know them and help build trust so that we can move forward ad push through any challenges that come up.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to seek to understand as much about them as possible and build rapport to increase their comfort and hopefully leave them with at least one technique that they can begin to practice prior to our second session.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I focus on the practical aspects first - what is most distressing and how can we address that. Then we delve into the deeper components.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
SCUBA diving, fencing, running, reading, movies and spending time near the water.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I am an animal lover.
Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?
Was able to "cure" OCD by working through some creative behavioral techniques with the client. Used his cell phone to help him take a daily video of him locking his front door. He had been at risk for losing his job due to being late as a result of going back. We set up a system where he would check the video on the phone when on his way to work.
