About Heather

Heather Gilson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience in mental health care. Heather works with individuals who are looking to gain insight into themselves and improve their quality of life. She enjoys working with adults who want to make positive changes in their lives. She seeks to understand each individual holistically, including their backgrounds and the strengths they possess, in order to provide an individualized approach. Heather has worked with many clients with depression, anxiety, and stress-related concerns. Heather completed her Master of Social Work (MSW) at Delaware State University.

Heather believes that establishing a strong therapeutic alliance is essential to making therapy effective and helping her clients address thought and behavior patterns that keep them from enjoying life fully. Heather utilizes various treatment approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, person-centered (Rogerian) therapy, and solution-focused therapy.

Life can be tough, and Heather thinks that we all could use some support during the difficult times. Heather is confident that she can provide the support and guidance that you need to cope with the challenges you are facing—if you are ready to change.

Get to know Heather

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I decided to become a counselor because I enjoy helping people. My father was in a helping profession and taught me the values of caring and giving back. I also had a positive experience myself with counseling when I was younger and needed support during a difficult time in my own life.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I have worked with people ranging in age from 5 to 75. I particularly enjoy working with young adults.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I am most excited to work with people who are ready and able to dedicate their time and energy to counseling.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish all clients knew that they are stronger and more capable than they might think that they are.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I wanted to work for a company that deeply cares about it's clients and staff.

What inspires you?

Seeing people make changes and feel better is inspiring to me.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

For me to be kind, non-judgmental, and caring, and also to want to hear about their strengths and abilities, not just about the things they are struggling to manage.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

I want to learn more about the person and to start building the therapeutic relationship.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

I will do my best to help them with their goals.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I like to read, listen to music, and spend time with family and friends.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

I am very family-oriented.
