About Dorothy

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor of Mental Health with a Master of Science in Community Counseling and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Wilmington University. I have certifications in integrative mental health, mood disorders, and trauma. I worked as an intern at a domestic violence and rape crisis shelter. I have worked with children, adolescents, and families as an IOP therapist, a behavioral health consultant, and a school-based counselor. Since then, I have been in private practice, working primarily with adolescents, adults, and couples.

I take a person-centered approach with my clients. I believe in developing a therapeutic relationship that promotes positive change by building on current strengths. Feedback, education, and collaboration are essential to this relationship. From domestic violence and mood disorders to anxiety and life stressors, I am here to help you develop a plan.

Today is a new day—a new opportunity to make a different choice. This is your time to feel calmer, more empowered, and at peace! Now that you have taken the first step, I am here to support you in a safe, nonjudgmental space. My mission is to motivate, mentor, and give you the skills you need to become the best version of YOU!! Welcome to your new beginning

"Hi, my name is Dorothy James. I am a US Army Veteran and a divorced mother of 4. While my training has prepared me for my role as a mental health counselor, I also have lived experience as a mom raising a now-adult child with a diagnosis of ADHD and bipolar disorder (since age 8) as well as my own life experiences with overcoming childhood trauma and domestic violence. Get to know Dorothy

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

When I was a teenager, I had a counselor during a time when I had no one at all. I was resistant but she kept coming. She never gave up on me and I eventually opened up. From then on I decided I wanted to be that for others, someone who would genuinely care, who would listen and not judge, who would be the voice that one didn't know they had, to help them find the words and the peace within. I have been that person ever since.

What types of clients do you work best with?

That's tough but I believe I work best with women and young adults. I find that I work well with middle-aged men as well.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

That it is just that...a process and that you only get out of it what you put into it. No change happens over night but if you really want it and you are clear on why you want it...then you can make it happen.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

They can expect to be heard. I want them to share their story. I want to get to know them and for them to get to know me. We will work together to develop a treatment plan that they are in agreement with. They will have an understanding of what the journey will look like and what their rights are. They will leave feeling comfortable knowing that working with me is a choice and that I am always going to be respectful of their choice.

What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?

I have lived experience as a person who has overcome homelessness, domestic violence and childhood trauma, as a single parent, as a veteran, and as a woman of color. I believe that everyone deserves to be heard and listening to understand, showing up as my authentic self, and respect are essential. Counseling is not just what I do but who I am and I believe what it can do for people with everything in me.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

I meet clients where they are and I tailor my sessions based on what client's tell me they need and their expectations. When they aren't sure, we figure it out together because their input is essential in the success of their treatment.
