Jose Ramon's profile image

"I am the youngest of four siblings, born into a family of Mexican immigrants. From a young age, I was exposed to the world of living in underserved communities and spent most of my summers traveling to northern states where my family would work for farmers. These childhood and adolescent experiences and the challenges and realities that came with them helped shape the person I am today. These formative experiences have shaped my perspective and instilled in me a deep empathy and understanding for individuals from different backgrounds and upbringings. As a therapist, I bring this personal narrative into my practice, creating a safe and inclusive space where clients can explore their own experiences and find healing. My aim is to provide compassionate and culturally sensitive support to help individuals navigate their unique journeys towards mental well-being."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I have always been passionate about helping others and making a positive impact in people's lives. When I was in the military I was recognized by the Red Cross, and received a Community Outreach award and was presented with Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. Being a therapist allows me to combine my empathetic nature, listening skills, and problem-solving abilities to support individuals in their personal growth and mental well-being. It's incredibly rewarding to witness the progress and transformation that can occur through therapeutic relationships. I believe that everyone deserves a safe and non-judgmental space to explore their life experience and process their emotions and challenges. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be that support system for others.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I have found that I work best with adults who are experiencing acute stress and those who have more chronic conditions such as anxiety disorders and mood disorders. Over the years I have developed and refined my skills and have worked with people with medical comorbidities, chronic behavioral health conditions, those who experience chronic pain, vulnerable and diverse populations to include 55 plus and LGBTQ population.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I am most comfortable working with adults.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

The one thing I wish every client knew is that they should be their own best friend. So many people often are their own worst enemy and hypercritical of themselves yet they can have such a caring and warm regard for others. Just a little bit of kindness for yourself can help one overcome a plethora of obstacles.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I’ve witnessed the practice grow and “thrive” and accessibility to mental health care is still a significant challenge. Thriveworks makes accessibility to mental health care possible and are at the forefront of reaching out to people in need all over the country.

What inspires you?

As a therapist, I find inspiration in various aspects of my life, including playing music, spending time with loved ones, enjoying solitude, and reading. These activities contribute to my overall well-being and help me bring a fresh perspective and renewed energy to my therapeutic practice. Music has a way of connecting with emotions and expressing what words alone cannot. It allows me to tap into my creativity and find solace in the melodies. Playing and writing music not only helps me unwind and relax but also enables me to understand the therapeutic power of creative expression, which I can then incorporate into my work with clients. Spending time with loved ones is an essential aspect of my existence and this is the driving force that compels me to help others. Additionally, I cherish moments of solitude. Taking time for myself to reflect, recharge, and engage in self-care activities allows me to maintain balance and find clarity. Solitude provides an opportunity for self-discovery and introspection, enabling me to better understand my own emotions and experiences. This self-awareness translates into my therapeutic practice as I strive to create a safe and reflective space for clients to explore their own inner worlds.Reading is a primary source of inspiration for me especially in the fields of philosophy, cognition, neuroscience and social ecology . I’m a big fan of science fiction as well. Reading exposes me to diverse perspectives, new ideas, and thought-provoking stories. By immersing myself in literature and poetry, I can expand my understanding of the human experience and gain valuable insights that I can apply in my therapeutic work.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

On the first therapy visit, my main objective is to create a foundation of trust and understanding between myself and the client. This involves creating a safe and non-judgmental space where the client feels comfortable opening up and sharing their thoughts and emotions. Administrative paperwork also has to be discussed and reviewed to ensure there is an official agreement between provider and client. the first visit, clients can expect a warm and welcoming environment where they can feel safe and comfortable. As a therapist, it is important to establish a strong therapeutic alliance from the beginning.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

By the end of the first visit I would want to establish rapport and gain a comprehensive understanding of the needs of the client as well as establishing the groundwork for a productive therapeutic experience.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

I have been practicing since 2009 and my approach is eclectic meaning I take the time to understand your life experience. Rather than fit your experience into a clinical model I get to evaluate your personality and collaboratively identify the best modalities. Consistency in sessions is very important to the therapeutic process. Communication is essential and keeping appointments facilitates the healthiest outcome.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I spend time with my loved ones, read, and play guitar. I’m a lifelong student and enjoy learning. Recently I have been exercising a lot more and my health has improved so I have taken an interest in more outdoor activities.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

My relationships, my hobbies and my belief that we make the most out of this experience.
