About Dr Mahlon
My journey into therapy began after I realized people were able to overcome really difficult experiences. I continue to believe that people cope with trauma in the best way they know how, and that courage and resilience come from inside. My role is to help you access those sometimes forgotten abilities. I work primarily with adults navigating trauma, building coping skills, or exploring personal goals. Whether you're working through trauma or exploring your goals, I'll work with you to create a plan for growth that feels empowering and achievable.
I treat every person as the expert in their lives and approach every session with curiosity. I use EMDR and Prolonged Exposure Therapy to help manage difficult memories, Internal Family Systems to help you better understand yourself, and mindfulness and relaxation to help you manage stressful situations.
Therapy is a partnership. We'll identify and set goals that matter to you As we work together, your goals may evolve as you gain new insights. Working together we will get to know each other and build a relationship. In the first few sessions, we will focus on coping and self-soothing, and I'll share techniques you can use when you feel overwhelmed.

"As someone who has experienced personal trauma, I focus my energy on creating a compassionate, affirming space, where people can explore their inner experiences and remember their true strengths."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I became a therapist because I see people struggling. People are put in positions they have to struggle out of and I don't think we should have to do it alone.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I work best with clients who are able to see the value of alternative treatments. I use a lot of meditative and mindfulness exercises and can really appreciate their utility.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
One thing I wish all clients knew is that therapy is a process of exploration and exposing ourselves to ourselves. It is more about collaboration and working together to solve problems, or improve situations, than it is about getting advice (something I don't really do).
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
I try to instill hope. Our first session or two is going to be focused on education around the nervous system, and how it not only reacts to stress but also how it protects us from stress. We will also explore, and practice, techniques to reduce stress.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
The feedback receive from clients best informs my practice. i pay attention to the verbal, and nonverbal, responses and really focus my attention on what the client brings to the session, not what I want to get out of the session. Personally, I try to go through life appreciating, and being grateful, for what others provide me.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
Therapy is designed to be for the person. Strict adherence to protocols disrupt the process and do not encourage the level of safety the client should feel with a therapist. As such, I look at what seems to be helping, and will ask for input when I see something, and will change my approach to meet the needs of the individual, not remain focused on protocol.
