Why did you decide to become a counselor?
When I was young, there was a long period of time where I was very depressed and became quite self-destructive. Although I was fortunate enough to have a large family and some friends, I still felt alone and unable to confide in anyone. I kept my struggles to myself mostly because I didn’t want to burden anyone with my problems and feared judgement. Even when I learned later that this is a struggle that many people go through, no matter their age, it was still difficult to open up to anyone. I became a therapist to provide an environment of unconditional regard and non-judgement, a safe space for people to unburden their problems and find answers.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
It’s important for everyone to make time to de-stress from the demands of our jobs and life by simply doing the things we enjoy. Sometimes these moments are hard to find, so we need to make it happen. When my family is available I treasure the moments we can spend together, visiting interesting new places, watching movies, or playing games. I also enjoy the serenity of being alone as I tend to my succulent garden, play with my cats, or simply sip some tea while listening to music or just or the sounds of nature.
