Get to know Blanca
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
Various experiences have culminated to get me to this point. My own lived experiences with mental health and identity, especially my identity as queer Latina, as well as seeing loved ones struggle with depression, anxiety, and suicidality. I also had the opportunity as a young girl to help children with Autism spectrum disorder and later, as a young adult, volunteer work at a suicide helpline geared towards LGBTQ youth. These experiences helped me realize how healing a non-judgmental, genuine connection can be.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I love working with people that are open to taking a deep dive into this journey of self-discovery. There will be some hard truths along the way but acknowledging all those things that we keep in the dark can really lead to major transformations.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
A simple way to start making changes is to change the way you talk to yourself and about yourself. If you are constantly saying negative things about yourself, you begin to take these as absolute truths and weave them into the story you tell about yourself.
What inspires you?
Seeing the way young people are reconnecting with their roots and their indigenous heritage. It's something I am still working on myself.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love to sing. I dance and take weekly classes in aerial arts. I'm a frequent beach goer, catch me in the sand with a good book. Watching a good "keeps you on the edge of your seat" thriller/suspense/horror movie is one of my favorite things to do.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I love to travel! Traveling is an opportunity to learn about myself and others, I love visiting historic sites and really learning about the culture and the people of the place I am visiting. I have traveled with friends, family, and solo.
