About Michael

I'm a licensed professional counselor with over eight years counseling individuals and families. I hold a B.S. in Psychology, a Minor in Music, and an M.S. in Counseling and Psychology from the University of West Alabama, and an M.A. in Counseling (School Counseling) from UAB. In 2008, I began as a Residential Instructor at Glenwood Autism and Behavioral Health, serving at-risk youth. I've worked in psychiatric hospitalization, alternative schools (grades 7–12), adult corrections, community mental health, school-based counseling, and in-home services. My style is experiential and fluid, helping clients discover their potential.

I believe it's an honor to enter the counseling journey with someone, treating each client with curiosity, kindness, and confidence in their ability to heal. As a Certified Specialist in Anger Management (CSAM), I work with trauma, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and life transitions. My approach includes CBT, trauma-focused therapy, DBT, and ACT.

"Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up." We all face similar challenges—managing daily stressors, seasonal setbacks, or long-term concerns affecting our ability to function. No matter the circumstance, you have the tools to get up but may need support. I welcome you on this journey. Rest assured, by taking this step, you've already won.

What types of clients do you work best with?

I work best with motivated individuals who are actively ready to engage in their own growth. Individuals motivated to make actionable changes and take personal responsibility for their progress outside of our sessions.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

Let me start by saying this: I understand. It can be scary and feel vulnerable to decide to go to therapy. Beginning a therapeutic journey comes with a lot of uncertainty, and it can be intimidating to share parts of yourself with someone who, at first, is a stranger. You may feel vulnerable, unsure, or even skeptical about being in the room with a therapist, and it is valid to feel this way. While it is true that therapy can be comforting, validating, and supportive, it also requires sitting in discomfort, untangling old beliefs that no longer serve you, and confronting maladaptive behaviors. Therapy may feel painful, but it is valuable because therapeutic change usually lives on the other side of growth and humility. Luckily, you do not have to confront these challenges alone since it is the therapist’s role to collaborate with the client to create therapeutic goals and conquer them over time.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

As a therapist, I want to know my client’s stories. I want to know what made them finally make an appointment and come to my office. However, I recognize that I am a stranger to all my new clients, and I must earn their trust to hear their innermost thoughts and feelings. This requires a strong therapeutic relationship, which can take a few sessions to build. Essentially, I am ready to hear your story when you feel safe enough to share it. This doesn’t mean that I will not ask hard questions or encourage your vulnerability; however, the pace in which you reveal yourself is ultimately up to you. The therapeutic journey is meant to unfold across months to years, so I don’t expect to hear your whole story in your first session. I will learn everything in due time.

What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?

My primary goal is to empower you to live a life aligned with your own deeply held beliefs. To help me tailor our conversations and make sure I'm supporting your needs, it helps to narrow down what you are looking for.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is “I can handle everything on my own, so I do not need therapy.” While it is true that you likely can handle everything on your own and have survived everything you have been through; it does not mean you have to or you should. We all need systems of support, even when we are not in a state of mental crisis or emergency. Therapy is wonderful for the inbetweens in life where we usually live: the subthreshold of anxiety, the relationship patterns you find yourself stuck in, and the sense that you have gotten away from your core self, but are not sure how to return to alignment.
