About Catherine
Catherine K. Thompson is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with 5 years of experience working with a variety of populations. Her specialties include adults with concerns such as anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief, low self-esteem, and childhood trauma. She also specializes in assisting women navigating the various challenges of motherhood, along with people of color.
Catherine earned her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Southern Mississippi. She believes that therapy is not a “one-size fits all” approach, and she utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy, humanistic therapy, motivational Interviewing, and psychodynamic therapy as most applicable to meet the client’s needs.
For some, the idea of therapy is without stigma and openly welcomed. For others, it’s one of the hardest decisions they will make. It is easy to remain in familiarity. Catherine is extending an olive branch in hopes that you will make the hard decision now to achieve the peace you desire in the future.

"If you are seeking to overcome the burden of anxiety, depression, or negative self-talk, I am equipped with the knowledge, resources, and compassion to meet you where you are to help you reach your goals."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I’ve had a heart to help others for as long as I can remember. Over time, I realized becoming a therapist was one of the best uses of my innate desire to empathize with and encourage others.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I am most effective with patients who are communicative, accountable, and open to being an impactful changemaker in their own story.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I have worked with various populations over the years, and it has been most satisfying to work with clients who are willing to do the work. It won’t always be pretty, but to see the fruit of their hard work in full bloom is an almost inexplicable joy.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Therapy works when you put in the work. Your therapist is like a coach and you are the superstar athlete. We guide and you execute the plays. When we listen to one another we are victorious!
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks provides the opportunity for growth in my career, ability to reach more clients, and flexibility to accommodate work-life balance.
What inspires you?
In this profession it is most inspiring to see a person’s growth. I draw inspiration from many things in my personal life, but God is my greatest source of inspiration.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Our first session is a rapport building session. It is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. Additionally, will discuss reasons for therapy and anticipated goals for therapy.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
The goal of the first session is to create an environment in which the patient feels encouraged to proceed with therapy and identify possible barriers to care.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I am not your typical therapist. I love what I do. I am motivated to be a guiding force as you work towards your goals. Clients will most likely experience moments of laughter and tears. As seriously as I take my job, I understand that we discuss heavy topics and at times I will intentionally lighten the mood with humor (if appropriate). Not to be dismissive, but in efforts to provide a light-hearted atmosphere.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Without a doubt my relationship with God.
