About Sunshine

As a nurse practitioner, I've practiced in family medicine, wound care, plastic surgery, urgent care, and perioperative and hospital medicine. This broad clinical foundation allows me to approach care holistically, recognizing the connection between physical and mental health. In my psychiatric practice, I work with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, ADHD, personality disorders, and schizophrenia. I care for clients across the lifespan who may be navigating life transitions, emotional distress, chronic mental health conditions, or seeking greater stability and quality of life.

I take a collaborative, patient-centered approach, developing individualized treatment plans based on shared goals we establish together. My aim is to create a supportive environment where you feel empowered, understood, and actively involved in your healing—helping you build resilience, strengthen coping strategies, and achieve meaningful, lasting change.

I bring both professional knowledge and real-life understanding to the care I provide. My life experiences allow me to meet you where you are, offering a nonjudgmental approach focused on supporting your individual needs. I look forward to supporting you on your journey toward healing and balance.

Get to know Sunshine

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

My decision to pursue a career as a PsychiatricMental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) stems from both professional experience and personal motivation. While working in family medicine during the COVID-19 pandemic, I witnessed a significant rise in patients struggling with anxiety, depression, and unresolved trauma. Many of these individuals faced barriers to accessing timely mental health care, and I often found myself limited in how much support I could provide. This gap in care made it clear to me that expanding my knowledge and clinical scope was necessary to better serve my patients. In addition to my professional experiences, my interest in psychiatric care is deeply personal. I have seen the effects of trauma and posttraumatic stress within my own family, as well as among first responders who regularly face highstress and potentially traumatic situations. These experiences have inspired me to learn more about trauma-informed care and evidence-based approaches to treating PTSD.

What types of clients do you work best with?

I am particularly effective in establishing rapport with clients who are open to care, fostering a collaborative and supportive therapeutic environment.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

One thing I wish all clients understood is that caring for their own mental and emotional wellbeing is not selfish—it is essential. Prioritizing selfcare allows them to show up more fully and sustainably for the people in their lives.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

During the first session, clients can expect a welcoming and nonjudgmental space where I ask open-ended questions to better understand their experiences, concerns, and goals. The more detail shared, the better I can tailor care to their individual needs, whether that involves therapy, medication, or a combination of both. These initial sessions usually last 45–60 minutes.

What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?

My approach to care is shaped by over 25 years of nursing experience, as well as personal and family experiences with trauma. Together, these have fostered a deep commitment to compassionate, trauma-informed, and patientcentered practice.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

I continuously tailor therapy based on what I learn about each client during the intake and throughout our sessions, ensuring that care is personalized, flexible, and aligned with their evolving needs.
