Alison Graham is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who has worked with a spectrum of patients from adolescence to geriatrics. She has helped these individuals with depression and anxiety, all the way to psychosis and self-harm.

"Mental illness can be scary and isolating. I am not here to just focus on your symptoms. My purpose is to see you as a whole person," says Alison. "I offer honesty, hope, and humility during every visit. I want to have those tough conversations to then get to those 'I did it!' ones. While working with you, I am also your greatest advocate."

"Emotional pain is not something that should be hidden and never spoken about. There is truth in your pain, there is growth in your pain, but only if it's first brought out into the open," says Alison. "Let's work together to learn how to not sit in the pain forever but to sit in it for just enough time to grow from it."

"As your provider, my priority is not focusing on just the "symptom" of the illness, it is to help you understand your mental health as a whole and the "illness" is something you experience and it does not define you. "

Get to know Alison

Why did you decide to become a psychiatric provider?

Every person on the planet has gone through something difficult that has changed their perspective and overall self. I want to be a part of their journey if I can make it even a tad easier.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I work with well with all clients that have bravely seeked out care for their mental health.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I am excited to work with clients who are open with their struggles and also the ones that struggle to even find how to put their emotions into words.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

Meeting with a therapist/psychiatrist will not make the difficult circumstances go away after one meeting. It is important to understand that it is a process of sifting through the worst of situations and emotions, learning how to cope, building new strengths, but most importantly, building a trusting partnership with the provider to make it work.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

Thriveworks is well-established, organized, and you can tell everyone in the company enjoys what they do. Thriveworks offers great collaboration with others providers and staff, autonomy, and flexibility.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by my son. He has autism and has conquered every obstacle in his way.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

I am honest, fair, willing to listen, and do not have a sterile "doctor" personality.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

Trust and respect on both sides.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

I am honest and trustworthy. Honesty is crucial when working with someone about their struggles and even triumphs. Mental health is a vulnerable topic for discussion. Trustworthiness is just an overall quality to have.

What do you do for fun in your time off?

I am a beach bum to the tee. I grew up on the ocean my whole life. I love surf and fish. I moved to NC five years ago and I have loved to ski, snowboard, and hike. Most importantly, spending time with my family is anything I could ask for.

Does Alison prescribe medications effective for the treatment of ADHD?

Yes - when clinically appropriate, Alison may prescribe both non-stimulant (all ages) and stimulant (adults only) medication for the treatment of ADHD.
