Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I decided to become a psychiatric provider because I have always been passionate about caring for the whole person—not only addressing physical health needs but also understanding the emotional experiences, challenges, and life circumstances that shape a person’s well-being. Throughout my more than 35 years as a nurse, I witnessed how deeply mental health impacts individuals, families, and communities, and I saw the importance of providing compassionate, accessible, and evidencebased support. My journey into psychiatric mental health nursing was inspired by the opportunity to help people feel heard, understood, and empowered during some of their most vulnerable moments. I believe every person has a unique story, and meaningful healing begins with trust, connection, and a safe space where individuals can openly share their experiences. Becoming a PMHNP allows me to combine my clinical experience, knowledge of psychiatric care, and commitment to helping others develop hope, resilience, and a better quality of life.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I work best with adolescents and adults who are seeking support for challenges such as anxiety, depression, mood disorders, ADHD, traumarelated concerns, life transitions, and difficulties managing stress or emotions. I especially enjoy working with individuals who are ready to better understand themselves, improve their mental health, and develop strategies to create meaningful change in their lives. My extensive nursing background and experience in mental health have helped me connect with people from diverse backgrounds and with varying levels of need. I value working with clients who appreciate a collaborative approach, where we can build trust, explore their unique experiences, and create a personalized treatment plan that aligns with their goals. Whether someone is struggling with a new concern or has been coping with symptoms for many years, I strive to provide a safe, supportive, and respectful environment where they feel heard and empowered.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
One thing I wish every client knew is that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Mental health is an important part of overall well-being, and healing is a personal journey that takes time, patience, and selfcompassion. You do not have to wait until things become overwhelming to reach out for support. I believe meaningful progress happens through a trusting partnership where you feel heard, respected, and understood. Every person’s journey is different, and there is no single path to healing. With the right support, evidence-based treatment, and a willingness to take small steps forward, positive change and a better quality of life are possible.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
In our first session, clients can expect a welcoming, supportive, and judgmentfree environment where we begin by getting to know them as a whole person—not just their symptoms or diagnosis. We will discuss their current concerns, mental health history, medical background, life experiences, strengths, and personal goals. This initial conversation helps me better understand what they are going through and what kind of support may be most helpful. During the early stages of care, we will work together to develop an individualized treatment plan that aligns with their needs, preferences, and goals. This may include medication management, education about mental health conditions, lifestyle recommendations, and supportive therapeutic strategies. I encourage clients to ask questions, share their concerns openly, and actively participate in their care. My goal is to build a trusting relationship where clients feel comfortable, respected, and empowered as they work toward improved mental health and overall wellbeing.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
My practice is deeply informed by my more than 35 years of experience as a nurse caring for people during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Throughout my career in medical-surgical nursing, emergency care, critical care, and mental health, I have learned that every person has a unique story, and true healing begins when individuals feel seen, heard, and respected. My experiences working with diverse populations have shaped my belief that compassionate care, patience, and trust are essential parts of the healing process. I value treating each client as a whole person by considering not only their symptoms but also their life experiences, relationships, physical health, strengths, and personal goals. As a PMHNP, I strive to create a safe and supportive environment where clients feel comfortable sharing their concerns without fear of judgment. My approach is guided by empathy, respect, collaboration, and the belief that everyone has the ability to grow, heal, and achieve a better quality of life with the right support.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
I believe mental health care should never be a one-size-fits-all approach. I tailor my care by taking the time to understand each client’s unique story, experiences, values, strengths, challenges, and personal goals. During our initial sessions, I focus on building trust, listening carefully, and gaining a comprehensive understanding of each person’s emotional, medical, social, and lifestyle factors that may influence their mental health.
