About Michael
Michael Scott is a Licensed Professional Counselor with 16 years experience working in the mental health field. He has a passion for supporting families and children and is especially sensitive to the unique challenges of military families. Michael specializes in providing short-term, solution-focused support for individuals, couples, and families dealing with relationship issues, stress, depression, anxiety, adoption, adjustment and life's many unexpected turns.
Michael completed his master's degree in mental health counseling at Old Dominion University. He utilizes multiple treatment strategies, leaning heavily on a short-term, solution-focused approach to assist people in identifying issues and goals and supporting their work in achieving them.
It is hard to ask for help — harder still when dealing with life's unexpected events. Michael wants to make it easier by listening intently and supporting you in identifying solutions and strategies to overcome, cope with, and adjust to the issues that bring you to counseling.

"As a husband and father surrounded by a community of military service members and their families, I understand the many and diverse challenges families, couples, and kids face in their busy lives."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I decided to become a counselor because I find people, myself included, have such a need to be heard and understood as they sort through life's tough turns. I enjoy being a counselor who listens, tries to understand and empowers people to find and move through their own solutions.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with people who are finding their way through one or more of life's events and needs support in finding resolution, coping or adjusting.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I find the most excitement working with individuals and families where adoption is part of their story. Families planning for and adjusting to a growing family and individuals seeking insight into their own adoption story, often need the support and experience of someone who has been there.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish everyone to know and believe just how safe a place the counselor's office is. It is safe to share your story. It is safe to unload your burdens and it is safe to be vulnerable and to be your full authentic self in this space.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by encountering life's epiphany moments; moments of great insight so often only found in the midst of our greater challenges. I am inspired by the amazing things people overcome and achieve every day.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In a first session, clients can expect to be invited to feel comfortable and to share their story. By the end of the session, clients can expect to have a thorough understanding of the process ahead, and the beginnings of a sense of their own goals for counseling.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In a first session, I hope to build an environment of comfort and trust. I seek to ensure people have space to share all that's on their mind and to feel heard. I hope to set expectations for the work ahead and ensure a clear and mutual understanding for the way counseling works. I hope to see initial goals for counseling emerge.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
Clients should know that I want to hear their story and want to partner with and empower them in determining their story's future. I want people to know that they'll have an honest partner through the uncomfortable parts, so often necessary for significant change.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
In my time off, I seek adventure and time with my wife and three kids. I find great joy in being in the outdoors and we love jogging, biking and paddling through parks, forests and mountain areas.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
One thing that defines me is my enthusiasm for new experience and delight in encountering the growth of others.
