Get to know Michael

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

When I was younger I always found myself being the person who was talked to. I found enjoyment and pride in people feeling comfortable talking to me about whatever it was they were struggling with. In doing so, I found myself wanting to learn how I can better help those people and provide them with knowledge and skills to be better suited to work towards overcoming their own unique situations.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I work best with Clients who are just as motivated to participate in therapy and enact the strategies and skills discussed as I am. A friend of mine once told me that as a therapist you cannot be more motivated than the client to make changes in their own life. I truly believe this and am willing to work with anyone to help them see that they can make a difference and they are worth fighting for.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I am most excited to work with clients who have a desire to make positive changes on their life no matter how small or large that change is. It is not up to me to decide for anyone how they want their life to look, but instead to assist them in taking this goal and turning it into a reality.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish all clients knew that they have some form of control over their life. While we may not always be able to pick the environment we were raised in or the circumstances of our daily life, I believe that we still have the opportunity to enact positive change in our own lives.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I have been working in the field of Social work for almost 4 years since graduation. I have a belief that without motivated and willing clients, I am not able to provide as much support and guidance. Thriveworks has made it clear that they encourage motivation on both sides of the therapeutic relationship, which allows me as the therapist to better assist in my role.

What inspires you?

It is my belief that almost every person has to face their own set of unique challenges and barriers in life. I am inspired by individuals who take it upon themselves to acknowledge these challenges and work to improve upon their own situation. At the end of the day, I cannot wave a magic wand and create a better life for anyone. But I do believe that those who work to overcome these challenges have the opportunity to make a positive change in their own lives.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

Clients can expect the first session to be spent sharing about their interests, hobbies, supports, and possible situations that they are trying to overcome. I tend not to jump right into therapeutic intervention, and allow the relationship to be built on a foundation of trust and connection.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

During the first session I like to focus on introductions and getting to know the individual. I believe that while I may have some specific knowledge and experiences, they pale in comparison to the importance of that individual's own unique circumstance and their interests and hobbies.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

I have always enjoyed using analogies and making connections to other areas of life. I find it helpful to be able to take a step back from a situation and make connections to an area that may not have as much emotion connected to it. I have found that by doing so, my clients are able to identify possible improvements to their decision making process, and finding solutions that they may have passed by.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I enjoy spending time with friends and working in the garage on various cars or other projects. I have found this to not only be a rewarding opportunity to interact with others who share similar interests, but also to work through problems and learn new skills in the process.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

One thing that defines me is my loyalty to my friends and family. I have always been a person who takes pride in my relationships and always working to improve upon myself despite possible stressors or barriers.
