About Melissa
Hi, I'm Melissa, and I'm an LPC with 14+ years of experience in the mental health field, currently living and practicing in Southwest Virginia. My background includes crisis intervention, stabilization, and long-term support for those experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, mood and personality disorders, psychosis, addiction, and relationship issues. I strive to help clients better understand themselves, process where they have been, and move forward with a better quality of life.
As a lover of stories, I incorporate elements of literature into my practice and encourage you to tell me your story in your own words. My approach is dialectical, direct, and solution-focused to best help you identify what you'd like to explore. I incorporate elements of CBT, DBT, and mindfulness so you can gain insight and support your mental health.
Whether you're navigating depression or anxiety, processing grief, coping with work and relationship challenges, or simply seeking someone to listen and provide thoughtful feedback, I invite you to join me. Together, we can embark on a journey to "sit crooked and talk straight," exploring whatever is weighing most heavily on your heart and mind.

"I have a deep understanding of what it means to live with the up's & down's of the mental health journey and I have devoted myself to creating a therapeutic space filled with empathy, understanding, & opportunities for healing. "

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
The Indian poet Bhanusimha wrote "I slept & dreamt that life was joy. I awoke & found that life was service. I acted & behold, service was joy." These words have always deeply resonated with me, & are an inspiration for why I decided to dedicate my career to growing into the kind of person I needed most when I was younger.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I work best with anyone who is ready to show up to tell their story & has a desire to work on their mental health!
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
That it takes time, insight, & sometimes a few tries to get it right! Seasons in our lives change constantly, & that means sometimes the need for healing through therapy does too. If it's not a fit the first time around, try again!
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
First sessions are for building rapport & getting to know each other's styles & it's your opportunity to tell your story. I will listen attentively, ask questions to gain insight, & we will collaborate together on a plan to help you get the most out of the therapy experience. From there, we will work together each meeting to tackle whatever issues you bring to the table.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
Jean-Paul Sartre said "Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you." As someone who comes from a family background of generational mental health & addiction struggles, these words have always stuck with me. I know firsthand how much my past experiences impacted my life growing up, & I find solace in reaching out to people with similar stories to remind myself that we're all so much more alike than we realize.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
As a therapist, I start by meeting you where you're at in your life, & I follow your lead from there! Whether you're in the early stages of contemplating about making a change or you have already committed yourself to the process, my approach is flexible enough to support you at any stage you find yourself currently.
