About Provider

About Mary

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. Throughout my work, I’ve supported clients from diverse backgrounds facing challenges related to relationships, self-esteem, trauma, mood disorders, and daily functioning. I have a particular passion for helping individuals with a history of sexual trauma heal and reclaim their sense of empowerment.

I earned my Master’s in Counseling Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. My practice is grounded in person-centered therapy, emphasizing empathy, authenticity, and collaboration. This approach reflects my belief that people can grow and become fully functioning, and I integrate other modalities to support each client’s healing journey.

My goal in therapy is to provide a safe and supportive space that encourages self-exploration and personal growth. I strive to help clients build trust in themselves, embrace openness, and move toward living more fulfilling and meaningful lives. I welcome the opportunity to support you on your path to wellness.

Get to know Mary

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I decided to become a counselor following a difficult period of my life when I started reflecting on all of the invisible wounds and struggles we walk around with as human beings. I realized that I wanted to dedicate my working life to helping other people heal from those wounds and get through those struggles, allowing them to feel seen and understood. No one should have to go it alone.

What types of clients do you work best with?

I am open to working with clients of any background and with a broad array of presenting concerns, but I tend to work best with those who are open to the therapeutic process and are willing to be active participants in their own wellness. Ideally, we will be able to collaborate to explore what works for you, what matters most to you, and how I can best utilize my expertise to support you in moving towards wellness.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

I wish that all clients knew about the concept of unconditional positive regard in counseling. As therapists, we have the privilege of hearing your story and all of the internal and external factors that have influenced it. With that privilege, we get to show up with consistent, nonjudgmental acceptance and care for a client, no matter their behavior, thoughts, or feelings (even in moments where we might challenge you).

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

In the early stages of therapy together, our primary focus will be on building the therapeutic relationship. Research shows that the number one factor that influences successful outcomes in therapy is the relationship between the client and therapist. To establish that relationship, I'll start by asking questions about what's most important to you, areas of strength and struggle in your life, and about your lived experience, all while holding space for you to just be yourself.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

To put it quite simply, I ask questions. Throughout our work together, I will be checking in with you about how you feel our work together is going, whether we're focusing on what you want to focus on, and which interventions/approaches are or are not working for you!
