About Christel
Christel Hammett is a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 10 years of experience working with children from early childhood to adolescence and their families. She specializes in treating adjustment disorders, anxiety, attachment, autism spectrum-related issues, depression, low self-esteem, chronic stress, trauma, and more.
She has her Bachelor’s degree in political science and psychology from the University of Georgia and a Master’s degree in Professional Counseling from Liberty University. She has experience in outpatient treatment, crisis counseling, and in-home behavioral treatment. Christel utilizes an eclectic approach with a primary approach in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) while also utilizing behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, psychoeducational, and attachment-based approaches.
Christel enjoys working with individuals to realize their strengths and ability in treatment with the overall goal of working on healing. She encourages self-reflection so individuals can grow from their treatment and move forward with personal growth. Christel focuses on a person-centered approach to improve overall functioning.

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
Becoming a counselor allowed me to be able to assist others in personal growth and provides a way to help others make life changes.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work well with most clients who are able to build rapport and have a motivation for change.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I enjoy clients who are willing to work in session and outside of sessions in order to build skills that will lead to decreasing symptoms and improve coping.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish client's understood that they have the ability to change and that change should come with improving self esteem and self acceptance.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks allows flexibility in the field, offers support to clinicians and has the ability to meet client's needs for scheduling and options for therapy.
What inspires you?
My inspiration comes from recognizing the small successes during the day that add up to wanting to continue to grow and learn.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In the first session, I always review how sessions are structured, psycho education around the model that I use and also allow for questions about the therapeutic process.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In the first session, I want to lay groundwork for rapport building and trust.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love to be outside hiking or going to events. I also have a love for football and enjoy the fall when I can watch my favorite teams.
