Get to know April
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
When I was in the seventh grade, I encountered a family member who was struggling with finances, food, and housing. I looked into the eyes of the son, who was about my age, and realized that I wanted to be someone who would help them. It was amazing to find my purpose at 13 years old and I have never considered another career option. Well, I did consider being a school guidance counselor until I found out they had to arrive at school at 6am!
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who are interested in participating in the therapy process and are willing to reflect on their own feelings and behavior. I also work well with teens who sometimes don't want to open up to an adult or who don't have practice being reflective.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am excited to work with clients who want to improve their own situation. Teenagers can be tough to build a connection with but the reward of watching them grow is amazing. It's also inspiring to watch adults release hurt from their past and move forward with their lives.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish clients knew that they are the expert about themselves. I am able to be your guide but therapy is most effective when we collaborate.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I choose Thriveworks because they allow me to set my own hours and provide both in-person and virtual sessions. This allows me to serve clients in a way that best suits them.
What inspires you?
Watching people connect the dots in their life and then chose to make a change inspires me. It's awesome to help someone take steps towards healing.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients can expect a lot of questions; it's how we can figure out how I can help.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In the first session, I hope that a client and I can agree on the areas on which we want to focus.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
Clients should know that I will partner with them to help them heal. Moving forward is sometimes difficult but we can do it together.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
In my free time, I love to hang out with my family. We just started holding family game nights for the extended family and they are a blast! I also enjoy finding and trying new recipes. Sometimes they turn out awesome and sometimes they don't but the fun is in the trying.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I hope that my dedication to my family is something that defines me to other people. My family is the foundation from where I come and the thing that sustains me during difficult times. But they are also the people who make me laugh the hardest!
