About Alexis
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Virginia with over 17 years of experience working with clients who struggle with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and trauma. I also specialize in helping individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community work through the intersectionality of gender, sexuality, race, and identity, as well as the social prejudices and anxieties associated with family, friends, and workplaces.
I earned my Master's degree in Social Work from Florida State University and use a warm, interactive, and highly client-centered counseling style, focused on treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion without using stigmatizing labels. My approach combines cognitive-behavioral (CBT), humanistic, and other holistic techniques.
I will focus on tailoring sessions and treatment plans to meet your unique and specific needs. I'm a firm believer that therapy should guide and support an individual at their own pace. I know that it takes courage to seek treatment for a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps toward positive change.

"As a therapist, I recognize that having a judgment-free space to be able to process healing and change is vital to the therapeutic process."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
Helping others was always a passion of mine and as I became older I was able to try more areas of social work. Once I accepted a position in mental health I found that it was an amazing specialty that felt like I belonged.
What types of clients do you work with best?
My focus is typically goal-oriented so clients that may have some ideas of things they want to change or even if they aren't sure what they want to change yet but know they want things to be different and try to develop the tools to get there.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
Going through the intake process and discovering their concerns and goals is the most effective way I have of developing a treatment plan and helping decide what ways to approach specific areas of concern in an individualized way.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
To open up as much or as little as they feel comfortable - some stressful subjects may need to be processed, but therapy, while sometimes uncomfortable, shouldn't be painful, and I won't push people to talk about things they aren't ready to.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
At the end of the day it's not my job to judge anyone and everyone can benefit from help.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
I'm a very stubborn person and often have difficulty with communication so I understand the importance of it when I discuss this in session with clients. I feel like we're all human and providers aren't better or more capable necessarily so I feel like accepting those flaws and continuing to grow from them is important.
