About Monica
Monica Pinzon is a Licensed Professional Counselor that has developed experience helping families with generational trauma, cultural issues, youth-specific trauma, challenges as an immigrant, life adjustments, and family conflict. Monica is an immigrant who has a strong understanding of the impact that life adjustments can have on a person's mental health and overall sense of well-being. She is able to connect with youth easily and utilizes unconditional positive regard with all her clients. Monica completed her Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Monica utilizes a strength-based, client-centered, and holistic treatment approach and tailors dialog and treatment to meet the unique needs of each client. She uses different modalities as needed including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, art therapy, and play therapy, among other specialties.
Life is change, and change can be hard, but it doesn't have to be all the time. Life has a way of giving you opportunities to learn about your strengths and ability to cope with challenges. Monica uses her personal experience with change and her professional training to help you on your journey!

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
Growing up I witnessed family struggle with mental health and addiction struggles. I wanted to learn how to better understand and help others as well as myself in the process.
What types of clients do you work with best?
School aged children, adolescents, and young adults.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Pre-teens and adolescents.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Their natural ability for autonomy and self-empowerment.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Because of the amazing professionals and mentors that I know are part of the Thriveworks.

Healthy human connections and personal autonomy.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Transparency and genuine regard
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
To understand their needs and/or expectations of the therapeutic process and make them feel comfortable and safe to be honest and vulnerable.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I have an accent. I do not work on weekends. I am open minded and kind but firm with personal boundaries during and outside the therapeutic relationship.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy running the many beautiful city parks of San Antonio and at the river walk. I also love live music shows and finding new local spots to eat delicious food around town with friends. A daily ritual of mine is seating in my patio with a good book for at least a few minutes at the end of the day.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I am not afraid to stand out and be myself with others. I value kindness in all my interactions with others and will advocate for any marginalized individual whenever possible.
