About Provider

About Leanette

I am a Licensed Mental Health Clinician, Addictions Counselor, and LCDC with over 18 years of experience in human services and counseling. As a proud Texan, I specialize in working with first responders and individuals struggling with substance use. Trained in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), I understand the reality of high-stress roles, repeated trauma exposure, and the expectations that come with them. My approach is straightforward, practical, and grounded in real life. I help clients sort through what they’ve seen, what they’ve carried, and how it’s showing up—whether that’s anger, stress, burnout, or substance use.

I work with adults 50 and older, navigating life transitions, loss, a loved one’s addiction, shifting roles, and finding purpose in the next chapter. I earned my Master’s degree in Clinical Counseling from Bellevue University, utilizing evidence-based approaches, CBT, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, person-centered, and solution-focused therapy.

Current events, stress, and politics can get heavy, especially when you’re the one everyone else counts on. I provide a space to be honest about your personal struggles and the world around you. You don’t have to carry it alone. I am here to help you make sense of it, get steady, and move forward with clarity and strength. I'm ready to listen.

Get to know Leanette

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I didn’t end up in counseling by accident. After years working in human services and around first responder environments, it became clear this is where I do my best work. I’m good at helping people cut through the noise, look at what’s really going on, and figure out how to move forward in a way that actually works.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I especially enjoy working with first responders, people dealing with substance use, older teens, and adults 50 and up. I also work well with people who are ready to be honest about what’s going on in their life and want something more than surface-level conversations.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

You’re allowed to be who you are. A lot of people carry shame for things that came from their upbringing, genetics, or life experiences. Those things matter—but they don’t get to decide your future. You still have a say in what your life looks like.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

It gives me the ability to focus on the work itself—helping people—without a lot of unnecessary barriers.

What inspires you?

Helping people and staying involved in my community. I don’t like sitting on the sidelines—I stay active through volunteer work, including supporting first responders, working with a CISM team, and volunteering with the Red Cross.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

A straightforward conversation. We’ll get to know each other, talk about what brought you in, and start figuring out where to go from there. No pressure—just real conversation.

What do you want to accomplish in the first session?

To see if we’re a good fit. That matters. If we can build trust and communicate well, the rest of the work comes a lot easier.

What should clients know about you before scheduling?

I’m direct. I don’t believe in dancing around issues or avoiding hard conversations. That said, I’m not here to judge you—I’m here to help you be honest about what’s going on so you can actually make changes.

I’m trained in and actively involved in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), and I have a strong background working around first responders. I understand the stress, trauma exposure, and culture that come with those roles.

We can talk about anything—addiction, anger, relationships, work stress, or even what’s happening in the world right now. A lot of people feel like they have to filter themselves, especially when it comes to current events or politics. You don’t have to do that here.

If faith matters to you, we can include it. If it doesn’t, that’s completely fine too. This is your space.

What do you do for fun or in your free time?

I stay active in my community as a volunteer firefighter run EMS calls and I am also a part of a local CISM team for first responders. I enjoy riding motorcycles and being part of that community. I also like to travel—cruises are a favorite. When I’m home, I’m usually reading or learning something new related to my field.

What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

That’s changed over time. I used to think my past defined me, but I’ve learned it’s more about what I choose to believe and how I choose to live. At my core, I’m someone who tries to do the right thing, stay grounded in my faith, and stay connected to my family, community, and country.
