About Kristi
Hello! My name is Kristi Tanaka. I earned my Psy.D. in 2020 and a Master of Social Work from the University of Hawai'i in 2001, and I am credentialed as an LCSW and Board-Certified Diplomate (BCD). From 2009 through 2017, I worked for the Department of Defense at Schofield Barracks Health Clinic and Tripler Army Medical Center, providing therapy to dual-diagnosed service members, with a clinical focus on combat-related PTSD and military family issues. My experience also includes working with the severely and persistently mentally ill, at-risk youth, and children ages zero to three and their families through Easter Seals Hawai'i.
I offer supportive, evidence-based therapy for adults navigating anxiety, trauma, life transitions, and emotional overwhelm. In our sessions, you will be truly heard without pressure to fix everything at once. Together, we will explore your story, build practical tools for healing and growth, and help you move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
In our work together, you can expect to feel more confident, more at ease sharing your story, and even find moments of laughter. My approach is warm, welcoming, and down-to-earth, with a focus on what truly helps you feel better and move forward. If you are ready for care that feels genuine, compassionate, and personal, I would be honored to work with you.

"Helping you feel seen, supported, and hopeful again is my passion."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
Growing up in a dysfunctional home, I became deeply interested in psychology and human behavior, which inspired my passion for understanding people, healing emotional wounds, and helping others navigate life’s challenges.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I work best with individuals who are motivated for change and open to exploring new perspectives, building healthy coping skills, and actively participating in their healing journey.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
I want my clients to understand that therapy is meaningful work, and the effort you put into the process often shapes the growth and healing you will experience. While change does not happen overnight, showing up with honesty, openness, and commitment can lead to lasting progress and a deeper understanding of yourself.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
In the first session, clients can expect a warm, supportive, and judgment-free space where they can begin sharing their story at their own pace. We will talk about what brings you to therapy, the challenges you are facing, your personal history, and the goals you hope to achieve. My focus is on helping you feel comfortable, heard, and understood while we begin building a strong therapeutic connection. In the early stages of therapy, we will work together to identify patterns, develop practical coping strategies, and create a treatment approach that fits your individual needs and strengths. Therapy is a collaborative process, and I encourage open communication so we can move at a pace that feels productive and manageable for you. Over time, clients often gain greater insight, emotional resilience, and confidence in navigating life’s challenges.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
My personal experiences have greatly influenced my path as a therapist. Growing up in a dysfunctional home sparked my early interest in psychology and human behavior and gave me firsthand insight into how life experiences can shape emotional well-being, relationships, and resilience. Those experiences helped me develop deep empathy, compassion, and a genuine desire to help others feel understood and supported. I value authenticity, trust, and creating a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients can be themselves without fear of criticism or pressure. I believe healing happens through connection, self-awareness, and consistent effort, and I strive to provide care that is compassionate, practical, and grounded in evidence-based approaches. My goal is to help clients feel empowered, hopeful, and better equipped to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and selfunderstanding.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
I believe that every client’s experiences, personality, and goals are unique, so therapy should never be a one-sizefits-all approach. I tailor treatment by taking time to understand each client’s background, strengths, challenges, and what they hope to gain from therapy. Together, we create goals and a treatment plan that feels realistic, meaningful, and supportive of their individual needs. I draw from evidence-based approaches while remaining flexible and collaborative throughout the process. Some clients may benefit from learning practical coping skills and structured strategies, while others may need more space to process emotions, past experiences, or relationship patterns. I also adjust the pace of therapy to ensure clients feel comfortable, supported, and empowered as they move through their healing journey.
