Get to know John
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
Perhaps it was because I was the oldest sibling in the family that I developed an instinct to care for others. Or it could be my analytical and curious nature that causes me to find people's thoughts and behaviors absolutely fascinating. But whatever the reason, since as far back as I can remember people felt comfortable talking to me about their problems and I enjoyed helping them work through their challenges.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I enjoy working clients who are courageous. This can mean open to growth, changing old patterns, or even being willing to just take the first small step in a new direction.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to work with clients who have never tried counseling before. It can be intimidating to start on a mental health journey and I am thrilled to help make it a comfortable, productive, and enlightening experience.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Everyone needs help sometimes. Taking care of yourself can be a lot easier with someone to share your thoughts with.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Talking to a counselor can be overwhelming or intimidating but Thriveworks has done a great job of creating a user-friendly environment for connecting with a therapist. I want my clients to feel like getting help is not as difficult as they may have thought.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by growth. There may be challenges and setbacks but building a better future is always worth the effort. "There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow (hu)man; true nobility is being superior to your former self." - Ernest Hemingway
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Let's just have a conversation. I will welcome you into the office and ask you to make yourself comfortable. I will ask you about what motivated you to come to talk to me and we will have a natural conversation about what has been on your mind. Depending on where the conversation goes, we will work on a plan for what next steps we can work through toward your goals. No pressure or judgement, just understanding and support.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
When you leave your first session, I hope that you will feel as though I heard what you said and understood what you meant. I hope that you will feel a sense of relief for having gotten some things off of your chest and maybe made a plan of next steps to take. And I hope YOU will have a sense of hope and optimism about continuing a mental health journey toward new ways of thinking, feeling, and living.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
My guiding philosophy as a counselor is to meet you where you are. So even if you are unsure about your next steps, I am ready to help you identify them.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love spending time with my wife, sons, and our big dog Charley. I love all kinds of music and enjoy playing the drums. I also enjoy sharing the movies of my childhood with my kids.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I believe in kindness and interconnectedness. As Master Yoda said, "Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter."
