About Katherine
My name is Katherine. I have worked in the counseling field for 30 years. I have helped children and their parents as well as adults. I have a Master's degree in counseling. I am a licensed professional counselor as well as a licensed behavior analyst. I have helped individuals and families with a variety of issues to include: trauma, disability related issues, depression, anxiety, problematic behavior, school concerns and other presenting issues. When I work with youth and families, my approach is to understand the nature of the issue and support the process of moving forward.
I am certified in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) and the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT). My approach is to engage with clients and meet them where they are. While I use this knowledge to inform how I work with families and youth, I easily adjust to each client’s needs.
I am the parent of a young person who is a transracial adoptee and a young person with an intellectual disability. My personal experience does inform how I approach families. I understand the day to day challenges that youth and parents may experience. I hope that I can support you and your family with empathy and grace.

"As a parent of a child with an intellectual disability, I understand the challenges the youth and caregivers face navigating day to day life."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I knew as a teenager that I wanted to wanted to become a counselor. It fulfills me to engage with people who need support. I have done this for over 30 years and I love every moment. The best moments are when I and a client connect. I remember many clients from 30 years ago and I hope that I have a positive impact on their lives. They have certainly had a positive impact on mine.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I work best with a client who is willing to be open in regard to what they need from me.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
It is a process and it does not happen instantly. The relationship is the key to making change.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
I will start with assessment. I need to understand the client's perspective, needs, history and goals.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
My children inform my approach. I have a son with a serious disability and is a cancer survivor. I also have a daughter who is a transracial adoptee. They inspire me every day.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
I engage each client with what they want. I do not dictate to them what they need to do. I think that is the key to successful therapy. It is self driven and very personal.
