Shynekia Garner is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in the state of South Carolina with nearly 10 years of experience working with children, teens, adults, and families who are struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship, medical, and substance abuse issues.

She completed her Bachelor's degree in Political Science with a minor in English from the University of South Carolina Upstate and received her Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Converse College. Shynekia takes a client-centered approach incorporating solution-focused techniques (SFT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), medical family therapy (MFT), mindfulness-based approaches, and emotionally-focused therapy (EFT).

The ability to adapt to meet the needs of every client provides the freedom and creativity desperately needed to foster healing in a safe environment. Shynekia takes pride in forming a pure and authentic therapeutic alliance with each of her clients and is known to most by her nickname, ‘Shy’. The client is the driver and Shy is simply the passenger helping to guide each along the way in a collaborative and meaningful exchange.

"As a human first and therapist second, I know we all go through hard times in life, but how we choose to act in these moments makes all the difference."

Get to know Shynekia

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I became a counselor after realizing how important human connection is for healing and the desire to see others reach their fullest potential.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I enjoy working with children and adults.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I have enjoyed working with children and clients who are motivated for change and by agreeing to engage in therapy is half the battle already.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish all clients knew how unique they are and the power they hold in bringing about change in their own healing.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I chose to practice at Thriveworks due to the flexibility allowed with scheduling and it allows clients and I to engage in therapy remotely without having to always be seen in an office setting.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the change I see in others and very humbled to see others accomplish their goals.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

I am very client-centered and value a great therapeutic alliance. Clients can expect a compassionate and down to Earth therapist with an intense desire to see them win.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

In the first session, I hope clients feel open, safe, and vulnerable enough to discuss their issues.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

For fun, I enjoy baking, reading, parks, and family.

What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

I strive to be my authentic self and hopefully that encourages others to be who they are in the process.
