About Kathleen

Kathleen Horn is a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) who has a love for dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). She is passionate about helping people and reducing mental health stigma and feels that DBT is a great tool to have in anyone's toolbox. Kathleen has experience helping those experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, relationship issues, life transitions, and borderline personality disorder. Kathleen completed her Master of Social Work at the University of Maryland School of Social Work after first pursuing and falling in love with social work at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Kathleen understands that life can have a habit of throwing unexpected curveballs and that it is easier to manage them when you are supported. She appreciates a strength-based, dialectical-behavioral approach along with the use of cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis, mindfulness, and motivational interviewing.

Every person faces their own challenges. Kathleen is here to support you through your unique journey and is committed to helping you create a toolbox full of skills to help you navigate life's twists and turns.

Get to know Kathleen

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

Kathleen did not initially set out in her career to be a counselor. Throughout the course of her education and work post graduation Kathleen held onto her goal of finding purposeful work that helped people and the values of the social work code of ethics. These two things guided Kathleen to counseling and she has never looked back.

Kathleen is an easy going person who prioritizes what her clients need.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

Kathleen likes to dance, learn karate, cook, and spend time with her family.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

Kathleen is someone who will find a way. She believes that everything will work out 'one way or another' this has helped her move forwards through complicated times. Kathleen's resilience has helped her when she unexpectedly needed to find a new internship while pursuing her bachelors and when that new internship unexpectedly became virtual. Kathleen's resilience has also helped her live out of a suitcase for a year while moving from Maryland to South Carolina, through the loss of friends, and while caring for her family while her husband was deployed.

Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?

Kathleen's client who reported the most success was someone who came in with a lot of inner turmoil. They experienced intense emotions, a lot of anger, and had a negative self image. However, they came to therapy determined to put in the effort inside and outside of session. They tried different coping skills and put in research on their own time; bringing into session what they had learned. This client also worked on being patient with themselves. There were several times that an issue they wanted to work on required more time to resolve then they were hoping for. However, this client kept practicing their coping skills and reminding themselves of their goals and overtime they were rewarded with progress.
