I’m Cherlyn Owens, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Converse University and clinical training through West Gate Family Therapy Institute. I am licensed in South Carolina and Virginia. My experience includes public service and private practice, supporting individuals navigating emotional challenges, relationship difficulties, and significant life transitions. I bring cultural humility and an appreciation for the ways identity, belonging, and lived experience shape our lives. My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in respect for each person’s unique story.
My approach is client-centered and tailored to your unique needs and goals. Using CBT and the Gottman Method, I help individuals and couples navigate anxiety, relationship challenges, grief, boundaries, betrayal, and identity exploration.
Therapy can help you explore challenges, build on your strengths, and create meaningful change. I look forward to supporting you on your journey toward greater well-being and connection.

"As a marriage and family therapist, I honor each client’s unique lived experience and provide a compassionate space where you can feel heard, supported, and empowered to create meaningful change."
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
My path to becoming a therapist began with a desire to understanding others and supporting them through life's challenges. While I initially studied computer science, I ultimately realized my passion was helping people navigate challenges and create meaningful change.
What types of clients do you work best with?
Adults and couples.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
I believe we do not have to figure everything out at once, and that therapy is a collaborative process that we shape together, guided by what matters to you.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
Our early sessions will be spent getting to know one another, exploring what brings you to therapy, and establishing goals for our work together. I approach this process in a conversational, collaborative way that helps you feel comfortable and understood.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
I value compassion, authenticity, and collaboration. I approach therapy with curiosity and respect, helping you build on your strengths and move toward your goals.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
Using collaboration, we identify goals that matter to you and choose approaches that fit your needs My client-centered approach allows us to adjust the pace and focus as we go. I welcome your feedback about what feels helpful and where we need to take a different direction.
