Get to know Austin
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I feel like my disposition is naturally that of a counselor. I listen more than I talk, I exude empathy for all, and genuinely enjoy helping others with whatever they are struggling with.
What types of clients to you work with best?
Clients who are self-motivated, ready to share and be vulnerable, and who are willing to see their journey through the counseling process to the end.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
Therapy is a marathon not a sprint to the finish. Therapy takes time, effort, and a commitment to the process.
What inspires you?
Not much compares to seeing a client make real lasting change, and progress towards achieving mental health.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
The first session feels like an interview, due to the first day being intake where I get to know you and your struggles a little better. It gets better I promise.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I would like to have a better understanding as to who you are as a person, begin to build rapport with you, provide a safe, casual, nonjudgemental, and inviting atmosphere for you to feel comfortable in.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy lifting weights, playing basketball, watching Gamecock football, and binging Netflix.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I feel like I get just as nervous to meet a new client, as new clients get to meet me.
