About Amanda
Amanda "Mandy" Verner is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with 18 years of experience in the mental health field. Why did you decide to become a counselor?
Simply put, counseling is my calling. Being a good listener and having empathy have always come naturally to me. Everyone has a story to share that is their unique experience with life. I very much enjoy hearing all of those stories, and I enjoy doing what I can to help so that people can have happier and better stories in the future.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with those who have depressive and anxiety disorders, as well as those who are stressed or grieving, because these are the issues I can relate to the most.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to work with clients who are new to counseling. I want their first experience to be a positive one, so that they are encouraged to follow through with the therapeutic process and possibly recommend counseling to others they know.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
Seeking professional help is a sign of strength, not weakness. It takes a lot of courage to pursue counseling, and I commend everyone who does.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I feel very privileged to work for Thriveworks. It is a company that has an excellent reputation and one whose foremost priority is helping clients, which is exactly what it should be. I really appreciate having the opportunity to offer secular as well as faith-based counseling to the clients I serve. I also very much like having the ability to work remotely and having a flexible schedule.
What inspires you?
South Carolina's state motto is "While I breathe, I hope." I believe that is so true, that as long as there is breath in our bodies, there is always hope. That inspires me.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients can expect a relaxed and friendly environment. If someone isn't comfortable telling me their most painful and private issues in their first session, I am okay with that. I recognize that I am new to them and that it can take time to build trust. Typically clients who are apprehensive their first session leave saying that talking to me wasn't nearly as difficult as they anticipated.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
My goal for the first session is to begin building rapport and to get an understanding of what is bringing a client to counseling, how these issues affect their daily life, and what the client's goals are regarding these issues.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy knitting, sewing, cooking/ baking, reading and spending time with my dog, Sadie. I also enjoy biblical studies and attending church, as well as spending time with family and friends.
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My faith is of utmost importance to me, and it affects every aspect of my life including how I relate to others. This means that I strive to be nonjudgmental and to treat everyone with respect, kindness and compassion.
