About Vivian
Vivian Ng is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of Rhode Island with over 13 years of experience working with children, adults, and families in community- and school-based settings. She approaches her clients with an eagerness to listen and learn their stories. As her clients allow, she walks into their spaces of hopelessness and distress to sit with those feelings, and she navigates her clients to a place of measurable change. The goal is long-term empowerment. The approach is relational and collaborative.
Vivian completed her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from Providence College and received her Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Assumption College. There is a vulnerability that comes with the seat of a client, and Vivian works to honor her client’s trust and confidence by providing strength-based counseling through techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, narrative therapy, coping skills training, and mindfulness techniques with adults. Additionally, Vivian utilizes affect-regulation strategies and play therapy with children, as well as parent-skills training and psycho-education with parents. She is also a Christian, and if clients are interested, welcomes the integration of faith and spirituality into the conversations.
Accommodating and attuned to both the clients’ and her own emotional world, Vivian aims to support her clients through navigating their thoughts and identifying their associated feelings and resulting choices. Her work is stage-appropriate, collaborative, and driven by best practices that move the client toward actualized healing.

"As an Asian American Christian, I approach serving others by honoring both their cultural and individual values. "
Get to know Vivian
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
There's a bible verse that says, we ought to "rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn," and I realized the way in which I may be able to fulfill this calling in my own life is to be in a space with those who are courageous enough to share and to listen to and experience their story with them.
What types of clients do you work with best?
Those who come open and receptive to the idea of unlearning old thoughts and behaviors and learning new ones.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Those who present issues of difficulty regulating their emotions or difficulty parenting.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
The most important relationship you will have is the one you will have with yourself. When you come to counseling, which is not an easy step, you are becoming a friend to yourself.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I appreciate the flexible hours, and that Thriveworks has an online presence, which allows more accessibility to those who need help.
What inspires you?
My clients when I see them working toward a change they cannot yet see but believe will manifest; the humility to seek help.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I will share about the therapeutic space I hope we can create together. Then I will give time to listen to your story as you're comfortable sharing.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I hope you will feel seen, heard, and begin to experience feeling understood.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Hosting and cooking for our loved ones and those by extension, serving at my church, eating kalbi (Korean short ribs), and watching shows with my husband.
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I will look for the best in you and, in our time together, try to help you see your strengths.
