Get to know Philip

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

Growing up as only child, my world was almost entirely populated by adults. As such, I grew fascinated by adult conversation and intrigued at the notion of what made people tick. During my teen years, I was usually the one helping friends negotiate peace during petty adolescent squabbles, consoling female friends in the aftermath of heartbreak, and leading conversations about life. I cannot forget to mention that I am also hopelessly inept when it comes to anything requiring mechanical aptitude.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I treat the full spectrum of people from all walks of life from 18 to 80 years of age, professionals, students, individuals who identify as LGBTQ+. There are truly infinite expressions of what it means to be human. Anyone struggling with various presentations of anxiety, panic attacks, OCD, depression, Bipolar Disorder, or those dealing with grief and loss. I also treat couples and have formal training in the Gottman Method

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

Anyone who is curious, introspective, and willing to further their self-awareness.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

That they are our best teachers. Therapists are never fully complete and that the process of getting to know ourselves is a lifelong professional responsibility

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

After spending six years as a director in community mental health, I was ready for a change of pace and a return to practicing therapy full-time. Thriveworks is for me the dream job and provides the closest duplication to what I always envisioned one day as a mental health professional. I value the autonomy afforded here to practice the way I want to and in alignment with my clinical training and core values.

What inspires you?

Being in the presence of those who are ambitious, full of an indomitable spirit, and never satisfied with just existing.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

I always seek to spend ample amounts of time establishing a rapport. I want to be certain that there is a degree of synchrony and comfort between us. Some therapists are quick to offer interpretations, and prescriptive solutions before they have sufficiently understood the presenting concerns, and before the client themselves feels heard and understood.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

In addition to building a relationship, I will incorporate a variety of standardized assessment tools to measure depression, anxiety, trauma, or personality inventories. So much of therapy is subjective, but if we can provide some means of measuring progress beyond "how are you feeling?" then that is gold in my opinion.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I enjoy reading, writing, running, hiking, travel, and spending time with family and friends.
