Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I recall going through many thoughts of what I wanted to pursue a career as. When I was in high school, I had a wide range of interests but couldn't settle on one. I began college undecided but learning toward nursing or the medical field. I took a step back for a year, returned to college and pursued a bachelor's degree in education with a major in health and physical education specializing in Aquatics. At times I felt drawn to helping others and felt like I had a lot of experiences to draw from. I worried about boundaries and feeling sorry for others. After several years of working in YMCA's I worked in mental health as a Therapeutic Support Staff. I then pursued a master's degree in Counseling in order to understand the reasons why things were the way they were.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I think I work best with clients that have the drive to understand why things are the way they are and desire to learn how to cope with how they feel and learn to maintain themself with support. I have experience through mental health, and I get excited for them when the "light bulb" goes on or when they find something that works for them, and they realize it.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I have personal experience with anxiety, depression and life situations that are challenging or learning to make adjustments and family conflict and setting boundaries. I enjoy helping people be able to cope with disappointments and learning that "we may not have made the mess, but it is our job to clean it up for our own mental health and well-being.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
We all need help at some point or another. We don't need to do everything on our own and it doesn't prove we are strong if we go through something alone.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
From the very first contact I made with Thriveworks I felt wanted and respected for who I am and what I am able to do and be. There was a lot of contact and follow up contact more than any other perspective employer. I felt supported and before I was even hired. The feeling of belonging is important to me.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by people who ask for help. People who still have hope inside them somewhere to be helped and to do go things for themselves then intern doe good and help others. This allows me to know we can continue to move forward in the world that is challenging.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
The client can expect a warm welcome, understanding and support with who they are and what they are experiencing. No matter how they feel on this day at this time it will get better. I am dedicated to supporting, caring and advocating for them.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I like to create report and build trust and understanding during the first session. I want to allow us both to feel comfortable with the beginning of this relationship. I want to help the client know that we can move forward together and face their challenges and find possible solutions or ways to cope with what they are experiencing and feeling.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I care about people. I want to help and teach others. I have a sense of humor when appropriate. I have been told I am easy to talk to and people feel understood when they talk to me.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I am a Navy veteran wife of three years. We live with our Chihuahua Cinco, Cat Puddin and cockateel Eli (Eleven). I enjoy crafts, binge watching television series, shopping, playing with my animals and enjoying my home.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I love my pets. They are part of my family and I have a lot of joy with them, and I can never provide them with as much joy and support they have shown me.
