Debra Cooke is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who specializes in treating life transitions, anger, self-esteem, parenting issues, and stress in all ages. Debra has 5 years of experience in the mental health field. She has worked with a variety of people with different types of trauma, and all have had the same needs: Everyone needs support and drive when they want to make positive changes, and Debra wants to support and push her clients as needed to help them improve their quality of life.

Debra completed her Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology from West Virginia University and her Master of Education (M.Ed) in School Counseling at California University of Pennsylvania and West Virginia University.

Debra likes to take a holistic approach and explore both internal and external factors that affect your overall health and wellbeing. She will create a personalized treatment plan that meets your specific needs, utilizing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), applied behavioral analysis (ABA), and positive psychology. Debra knows what it's like to feel alone, and she knows how relieving it is to find someone who actually understands and gives time and space to learn, think and grow. Let her be there for you.

Get to know Debra

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I knew that I couldn't be alone in my own experiences of hardship, and I'm thankful for the help that I received from school counselors, teachers, and mental health professionals. I want to be that help for others.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

All of them! I learn from my clients, and I'm eager to increase the diversity of knowledge that I can use to help others.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

Just because your life was/is hard doesn't mean it always has to be like that.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I want to be able to provide therapy services online as well as in-person because it provides access to mental health services for a wider variety of people.

What inspires you?

Music

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

The first session will be introductions and questions, maybe some assessments or observations depending on the client.

The first session will be introductions and questions, maybe some assessments or observations depending on the client.

I want to get a general understanding of you and learn more about how/why you came to therapy. I hope to identify some general goals and work on developing a plan to get you to where you need or want to be.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I like to do outdoorsy and active things, including strength-training and boxing; board games; regular movie nights; dancing; being silly with my kids; wine tastings and the like; vegging out as needed to recharge my batteries.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

I don't expect us to be all serious all the time.
