Life is hard. Therapy can feel strange. We are all doing our best to figure it out. Let Nan help you untangle, move forward, and live (not just survive). You will definitely laugh, most likely cry, and feel really messy at points, and it is absolutely okay. If you would like to try and figure it out, reach out and get scheduled.

"Therapy is weird, uncomfortable, unfamiliar, AND it is an investment in your emotions and your time. I get it, and I am here to help you figure it out with support and down to earth feedback."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I always loved Psychology, even as a kid, and I love working with people. We are all messy, amazing, complicated, resilient humans and I love helping people look at things from a new or different perspective.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who are invested, open, and willing to do the work. Absolutely people can benefit from having a person to process life with, AND when someone is ready to work, huge changes can happen.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I really enjoy working with young adults (mid 20s, early 30s) because there are so many life transitions happening. I get excited working with folks who have never been to therapy, or who haven't had the best therapy experiences.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
You will probably feel worse before you feel better. Also, it's normal if you have people in your life who may not "get it" with regards to changes that you are making in your life. Systems (partners, family, friends) know to how to relate to you in a certain way, and as you make changes, it will be unfamiliar for them, and they may consciously or unconsciously try to keep things functioning in the ways that they are familiar with.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks has a great reputation. The more I read and looked into the culture and ways that Thriveworks supports its Clinicians and works with Clients, I knew I wanted to be a part of it, and was excited to join the Team.
What inspires you?
People who don't quit. People who keep working and challenging themselves to continue forward, and get, do, and be better throughout their entire life.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
One of the first things I do with all clients during the first session is address the issue of finding a Therapist who is a good fit. If that's me, great, if not, I want to help them find someone who is a good fit. This is so important because therapy is an investment of time, emotion, and financial resources. If the fit isn't there, it can impede a clients experience and benefit. Second, we talk about what they are hoping to achieve in therapy, as well as what has, and hasn't worked for them in the past. Lastly, we start to talk about Somatic Awareness and also learning how to due Process work in sessions.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to start to build rapport with each client, as well as have an understanding of what they would like to be working on in therapy. Based on what the client shares, I will offer some topics that might be helpful to explore as they relate to the client. Ideally, the client leaves the first session feeling less anxious about starting therapy than at the beginning and feeling they have a plan to move forward.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
Im a straight shooter who will provide a lot of interaction and feedback. I am caring and direct and can cut through BS very quickly. I like to say I'm a "hold your hand and kick your butt" kind of Therapist. This is a great fit for some folks, but not everybody....and I'm wicked funny.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I absolutely love spending time with my husband and two adult sons who are active both active duty military (Navy and Marines). I'm an avid reader and big art nerd who loves visiting galleries and exhibits, and I am also a competitive Body Builder.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
First and foremost is my focus on my family. The other thing that defines me is my focus on overall health and wellness, and living a strong, healthy life in all facets.
Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?
I've been fortunate throughout my career to have had many successes with clients! A current client that I have been working with for three years intermittently has been able to successfully manage her BiPolar Disorder as well as create and sustain healthy boundaries with her family of origin that has been historically enmeshed and toxic. The client has been able to improve her mental, emotional, and physical heath as we have worked to take a holistic approach in her treatment focusing on self care, boundaries, symptom management, grief and loss, and effective communication skills.
