About Michael

Hi, I am Mike Skoda, and I bring an expertise in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), The Gottman Method, Couples and Family Counseling, EMDR Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). I have a passion for using a Relational method of really trying to understand you and your loved ones, being curious and non-judgmental in my approach to helping you, yet offering you practical solutions you can begin to use as additional coping strategies.

I am particularly skilled with couples and marriage counseling, working with traumas using EMDR, working with Obsessive Compulsive Disorders and Subtypes (using ACT and ERP), Attention-Deficit Hyperactive Disorders (ADHD) and Substance Use Disorders, and issues affecting those with addictions and their family members.I look forward to taking this journey with you as a trusted guide and helping you to get to where you would like to be!

Get to know Michael

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I became a counselor because I had a spiritual experience where I felt led into the field by my Higher Power/God.

What types of clients do you work best with?

I work best with clients who are looking for a guide to help them make some positive changes in their lives.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

We all have concerns that we need to address from time to time, and there is no perfect time to get started. Just come as you are, and therapy will help you gain insights and direction for living a good life and feeling good about yourself and your life.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

The first session we will get to know each other and our personalities and styles and it is information gathering and a getting to know each other process for you and for me. I hope you will see that I am relational, warm, and want the best for you and can begin to show you tools and coping skills to feel better about who you are and where you are headed in life!

What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?

Outside of work, I'm a dad to one awesome 12 year old son. I have learned through my joy of gaming, board games, and fantasy type novels and movies the joy of fantasy and creativity. I believe in living a clean, active life. I practice daily meditation and live an active and particularly enjoy racquet sports including tennis and pickleball as well as disc golf.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

I use a Relational and Humanistic approach where I try to take a step back and really understand you as a person and what's most important to you, and how your personality drives your decisions and behaviors. With this process, I find by working collaboratively with you that we can develop together a treatment plan you feel great about.
