Melissa listens and is affirming and kind. She also asks really good questions to help me process what is going on and get to the root of the issue. Her training in trauma has helped me understand my issues and how to process them, and her knowledge of ADHD, PTSD, and differential diagnoses has been invaluable in explaining my experiences and those of my family members.

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I decided to become a counselor because of my experiences as a child. I lived near a state psychiatric hospital during the period of time of deinstitutionalization. My father was a disabled veteran. He became involved in assisting the many former patients that had been released, without assistance, into the community. He would advocate on their behalf for employment, medical care, and housing through various organizations and employers in our community. He would often bring a person home to feed them and get to know them better. These experiences helped me to gain an understanding of mental illness from a personal perspective. As I went through various other jobs throughout my life, I always felt as if I was missing something. I chose to enter into social work in order to assist others with their basic needs, just as my father had done. I approach therapy from a holistic point of view. I am able to see the whole person, not just a diagnosis. This has been the best decision I have made. I love what I do. I believe in people and their power to change. I cannot imagine what else I would rather do.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I have worked in community mental health for over 7 years. I worked with clients with many different diagnosis. The clients that I have seen the most success in are those ready and willing to put in the work and not give up on themselves.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish that they knew they are the most important person in their life. Self care is not selfish. I wish everyone knew they had value and worth.
What inspires you?
People inspire me. It would be so easy to feel frustrated, angry, and sad if we choose to. Every day, I see people overcome what they did not believe they could. I see people fight back against their fear and transform their life. I see people who once felt there was no hope, get help, and turn into the most compassionate and empathetic people I have ever met.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
During the first session, I want to get to know the client. I want to know how long they have been experiencing symptoms. I want to know about their history, their childhood, where they are at today.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to start to build rapport and trust. I want clients to ask questions and be curious about their treatment. I want to develop goals and a plan for how we will reach their goals.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I want clients to know that I will meet them where they are. I do not direct the sessions. I am nonjudgmental and open minded. I want clients to know that they are they reason I am here.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
On my time off, I love to swim, hike, kayak, zipline, tent and cabin camp, go to amusement parks, whitewater raft, spend time with friends and family. My husband and I love our side by sides and off road riding. I enjoy my first grandson's visits every chance I get to have him. I like bonfires and cool summer evenings. I am an avid reader. I love to go to local concerts to support local musical groups. I enjoy my flower beds, even if it's a great deal of work each year!
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My friends and family tell me I make them laugh, often. I have a positive outlook on most every situation. I am loyal. I am open minded and willing to learn knew things.
