Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I decided to become a counselor because I already had a passion to fight negative stigma around mental illness. In high school and college I struggled with depression, anxiety, self-injury, and thoughts of suicide. I personally benefited from working with a good counselor and finding a loving community and I wanted to help other young people because I knew what it was like. I still do benefit from working with my own counselor with the mental health struggles that have persisted. My personal experience makes me a great counselor and I love the work I do.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who want to work together to achieve their goals or are on the fence and need some help. I also work best with clients who I'm able to build great rapport with personally no matter their background and personality.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I'm most excited to work with clients who want to learn about themselves and grow.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients knew that no matter what you may be going through now, there is a better future ahead. Even though therapy can be hard, the work you accomplish toward growth and healing pays off.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose to practice at Thriveworks because of the flexibility it affords me to serve people in Columbus and others in Ohio through telehealth services, as well as the flexibility in my schedule to be with my family.
What inspires you?
I'm inspired by the people in my life who have shown me such love and care when I've needed it the most.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients can expect in their first session with me to feel welcomed and cared for from the start.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In the first session, I primarily want to accomplish building rapport with the client and leave them with confidence that they can return and feeling hopeful.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
Clients should know that I don't take myself too seriously, that I'm not an overly optimistic person by nature, and I think bringing humor into therapy is not only okay, but necessary.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
The thing I enjoy the most for fun or on my time off is spending quality time with my kids and playing with them. They bring me more joy than anything else. Aside from that, I enjoy digital illustration, cycling, video games, listening to music, and being creative in other ways.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I love to learn and try new things. I often joke that my hobby is collecting hobbies. I'm never engaging in every interest or hobby at the same time and may find something new that captures my enthusiasm. I always want to learn and experience new things and read about new topics.
