Hi, I'm Mary Schehl, LISW (Licensed Independent Social Worker) with over 25 years of clinical experience working with individuals, couples and families, who are overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, relationship stress and unresolved trauma. I've worked in a variety of settings such as inpatient, home and community-based and for the past 11 years I've been in private practice. I bring my clinical expertise, authenticity and some light humor to our sessions together, providing a warm, non-judgmental space, where you can unpack what you're going through.
My approach is collaborative and grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness practices. You are the author of your own story and I'll go wherever you take me, while helping you build practical tools and have a better understanding of the root of your patterns.
It isn't easy to change one's perspective, nor does it happen immediately. It's a healing journey, not just a "process", and I would be honored to accompany you on this journey. If you think I'd be a good fit for what you're looking for and need in a provider, I invite you to take the next step by scheduling an appointment.

"Reaching out for help is hard for a lot of folks, so as a clinical therapist, I think it's important that I not only bring my clinical expertise and authentic self to a session, but that my clients are provided relaxed, down-to-earth space where they can finally catch their breath and begin their healing journey."
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I grew up with a personality disorded mother and an emotionally detached father. I frequently engaged in unhealthy ways to "cope" with depression, anxiety and "big" emotions.Becoming a therapist to help others with similar experiences was always there, it was just waiting for me to show up!
What types of clients do you work best with?
Clients with an open mind and the willingness to take suggestions and do the work.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
Change doesn't happen immediately. You're journey has just begun. Change means doing something different .tt's unfamiliar and can be uncomfortable or feel inauthentic. You're more likely to default to a way of thinking and doing that you want to change, but are familiar with. This is completely normal. This is a marathon, not a sprint.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
The first session is about rapport and trust building. It's casual. Determine if it's a good fit for the client. I'll go over policies and procedures and what the expectations are for them as a client (the importance of consistency, and notifying me if they're unable to attend a session) We'll have a conversation about the problem(s) that brought them in, what their experience (if any) has been with getting help for the problem in the past, current support systems. I gather intake info from the conversation. I don't dryly run down the list of questions on a form. Early stages of therapy include continuing to build rapport and establishing a trusting therapeutic relationship , collaboration developing a treatment plan.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
Unconditional positive regard and empathy, selfdetermination and personal choices.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
Matching specific evidencebased techniques, pacing and communication, cultural awareness and diversity.
