About Emerson
Emerson Fetty is a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) with over 5 years of experience. He specializes in issues related to the LGBTQIA+ community, gender and sexuality issues, anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, stress, life transitions, and more.
Emerson completed his Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) at Youngstown State. He utilizes a variety of treatment approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), motivational interviewing (MI), solutions-focused therapy, and of course strengths-based therapy (SBT).
Emerson views the opportunity to work with clients as an incredible gift and will work hard to create a relationship where his clients feel safe and able to freely express their needs. Taking that first step to engage in therapy can be difficult for many, but his hope is that you will be glad you did.

"As a queer trans man, I understand the challenges and unique perspective the LGBTQIA+ community has when navigating the world, and the need for a therapist who understands."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I started out as a photojournalism major in college and realized that I didn't feel like my work was helping anyone. After taking an intro to sociology class, I was hooked and knew that social work was the field I wanted to be in. I've also had the wonderful experience of attending therapy myself and it was truly a life changing experience that I hope to help others experience.
What types of clients do you work with best?
Engaged and motivated. Clients who recognize that this work isn't always easy, but know that I will accompany you through it all and that there is something great waiting for you on the other side.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Just because you feel this way now, doesn't mean you will feel this way forever. Ignoring the problem doesn't make it go away.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I appreciate the compassion they demonstrate towards their clinicians and that they recognize we need to be able to appropriately care for ourselves in order to care for others.
What inspires you?
When I see that lightbulb moment with clients. Seeing the change in my clients over time and celebrating their successes with them.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
Let's just get to know each other. I encourage questions if you have them. A lot of the first session if just us getting to know one another and figuring out our game plan for what we want to accomplish.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
My goal is to help you feel comfortable. If there is something you need, don't hesitate to ask. It's a two-way street, so in order to make this relationship work you should be able to feel safe as we work together.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Hang out with my pup Lila, have fun with my amazing niece and nephew, spend time with friends and family.
