Get to know Alannah

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I decided to become a counselor because I wanted to create a space where people feel seen, heard, and valued. My own experiences navigating challenges like chronic illness and being part of the queer community made me realize how vital it is to have compassionate support.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I thrive in supporting individuals who seek a collaborative and inclusive space to explore their experiences. I’m passionate about helping clients find their unique paths to healing, so anyone who values that journey is a great fit!

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I am excited to work with clients who are ready to engage in self-discovery and are eager to cultivate their own narratives. I find it incredibly rewarding to help individuals build skills focused on resilience and self-advocacy!

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish all clients knew that it’s completely okay to take their time in the healing process. Everyone's journey is unique, and there’s no right way to feel or progress. Healing isn’t linear, and it’s important to honor your own pace.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I chose to practice at Thriveworks because the flexible scheduling options allow me to better meet the diverse needs of my clients, accommodating their varying circumstances and preferences.

What inspires you?

I draw inspiration from influential thinkers like Kimberlé Crenshaw, Judith Butler, Jane Elliott, and Maya Angelou. Crenshaw’s work on intersectionality deeply resonates with me, highlighting how our identities intersect and shape our experiences. Judith Butler’s exploration of gender and identity encourages me to challenge norms and embrace fluidity in self-expression. Jane Elliott’s commitment to social justice and her powerful anti-bias exercises inspire me to create inclusive spaces for all. Finally, Maya Angelou’s wisdom about resilience and the power of one’s voice motivates me to help clients embrace their stories and find strength in their journeys. Together, these figures remind me of the importance of empathy, advocacy, and the transformative power of self-acceptance.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

Our first session will begin with an intake process, which involves gathering some background information to better understand your unique situation and needs. This includes discussing your goals for therapy, any challenges you’re facing, and your personal history. This session is a great opportunity for you to ask questions and ensure that you feel comfortable moving forward.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

In the first session, my main goal is to establish a sense of safety and connection. I want to create an open space where you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and feelings.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?

Before scheduling a first session, clients should know that I value openness, authenticity, and collaboration. I believe in empowering clients to take an active role in their healing journey, and I’m here to support you every step of the way. If you have any specific needs or preferences, please feel free to share those with me; I want our work together to feel right for you from the very beginning.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

In my free time, I enjoy connecting with nature through hiking, exploring fantasy worlds through reading and video games, and building support through spending quality time with my friends and family. I also have a deep love for animals and find spending time with my pets to be incredibly grounding.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

One thing that defines me outside of my professional life is my passion for astrology and tarot. I find great joy in exploring how these practices offer insights into our personalities and life paths. Both tools resonate with my love for storytelling and connection, allowing me to appreciate the narratives we all carry. They also remind me of the importance of self-discovery and intuition in our journeys.
