Get to know Christine

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I chose to become a counselor because I was naturally drawn to jobs in the helping profession and in grass-roots community outreach and mental health. To be able to lift a person up, help them feel better, and be a part of healing the community makes the job more gratifying and humbling.

What types of clients do you work with best?

Children, adolescents and families.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I'm excited to work with an array of clients of all different ages and categories (children, adolescents, geriatrics, families, veterans, couples, LGBTQ).

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish all clients knew that therapy takes work and is a mindset change. It's persistent and daily work on yourself.. Sometimes you'll relapse and get back into old patterns, but with the right mindset you can positively change your outcomes.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I chose to work at Thriveworks because of the professional, supportive and empowering environment available to both clinicians and clients. Thriveworks also allows for a flexible work schedule that promotes work-life balance and self-care so I’m able to provide optimal care to my clients.

What inspires you?

My faith and family inspires me. My favorite bible passage is, "I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength." -Philippians 4:13 To know you are not alone in your struggles gives you assurance that you can get pass all life's hurdles. As a single mother, my daughters inspire me to always push through challenges.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

Clients can expect a supportive and nurturing atmosphere, a compassionate and empathic therapist that is ready to get to know you and offer guidance on how YOU want to accomplish your goals in therapy.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

Two things that are important to accomplish in the first session are establishing treatment goals and building therapeutic rapport. Client-centered treatment goals are needed to ensure a collaborative treatment approach. It’s important that patients feels safe, comfortable, validated, and supported when having sessions with me.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?

I'm very friendly, patient and honest. I'll encourage you and challenge you to do your best. If you're committed to doing better, I'll be 100% committed to helping you in therapy. You will feel safe, comfortable and your feelings are important. I care about your overall well-being and if I can't help you then I'll definitely connect you with someone that can.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I enjoy spinning classes, spending time with my dog Nova and family, traveling, and online shopping.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

I'm faith based, family oriented, and genuinely care about humanity.

Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?

I had the opportunity to work with an 77 year-old elderly woman that was diagnosed with having a mild neurological disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Her presenting symptoms included memory issues, irritability most of the day, restlessness and persistent worries of her family. She complained of not being able to remember things, having a difficult time organizing things, and always wanting “to fix” everyone else’s problems. She’s been a caregiver most of her life and feels very uneasy about others taking care of her. Her question is how can I stop trying to “fix” things for others when I know I need help? Since memory was one of her primary concerns, I worked with her in using mnemonic devices or audio devices (such song phrases, audio notes, Alexa reminders or other voice records) to remind her of discussions in session and key activities. She also used a variety of calendars to help with scheduling. Secondly, she worried about family issues. I worked with her in planning a family meeting in which she did not “fix” anything but allowed family members to take responsibility and charge in helping with their family issues. She also assigned one family member to take notes to record the meeting for later reference. She mentioned that the mnemonic/audio devices and family meeting was very helpful. Her family took accountability of being a part of the problem and coming up with family solutions. I continued to work with this patient and used calming strategies for anxiety symptom management. Patient reported positive progress and is slowing starting to accept that it’s okay not fix everything and allow others to take care of her.
