About Lance
Lance Pritchard is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with 10 years of experience in the mental health field. Lance is passionate about helping people identify and conquer the obstacles that stand in the way of them achieving the wellness and stability that they are striving for. He specializes in addictions, anxiety, depression, grief, and stress. After working in substance abuse treatment facilities for most of his career, Lance has accumulated a lot of experience working with folks struggling with addictions and the associated mood, relational, and other issues that frequently go along with that.
Lance completed his Master of Science (MS) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Southern Adventist University in beautiful Collegedale, TN. He has a great deal of experience using behavioral interventions like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), as well as integrating motivational interviewing and some solution-focused ideas into his therapeutic work. Lance brings a combination of real-world experience and technical knowledge to the table in a way that helps his clients feel heard, understood, and cared for. He emphasizes creating lasting change through identifying and changing negative beliefs that a client may have about themselves, the world around them, and their own ability to interact with that environment.
Lance will work with you to amend impaired thinking, change negative behaviors, and to develop a meaningful spiritual connection with a higher power of your own understanding. Maintaining a sense of wellness or making lasting positive change in your life is difficult even when things are going well around you. When you consider the amount of turmoil and chaos present in our society today, it is causing people who would normally be very functional and stable to struggle and falter under the pressure. This environmental stress also hurts those who may already be struggling with mental health or addiction issues, causing these conditions to worsen. This is nothing to be ashamed of, but also not something to be ignored. Lance doesn't have any magical answers, and doesn't promise that things will suddenly get easier; but he has the experience, empathy, and compassion to help you on the next leg of your journey to wellness. If you are looking for someone to empathetically walk with you through your current struggles, and to help you navigate upcoming hurdles as well, you are welcome to schedule an appointment with Lance today!

"Just as no two people are alike, the pathway to recovery is different for everyone. I am a big believer in meeting a patient where they are at and helping them decide on and move towards the next steps to wellness, on their own terms."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I got into psychology because I wanted to help myself. I got into counseling because I needed to help others. What I ended up learning is that, if you take on both of these challenges the right way, you can accomplish both goals at the same time. I think that if you asked a bunch of counselors and students of psychology this question, and if they decided to be really honest, they would answer in a similar fashion.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work well with clients who are open-minded, honest with me, and ready to do the necessary work in order to get better.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am excited to work with anybody who is earnestly trying to make a positive change in their lives. As someone who has personally battled addictions, mood problems, and more then their share of grief and trauma, I feel like I carry great empathy and relevant insight for those who are struggling with similar issues. However, I believe that the specifics of the issues at hand are less important than the level of motivation to make a change and the client's level of commitment to the therapeutic process.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
There's so many things that come to mind, but I guess the biggest one is my belief that as long as you are breathing, there is opportunity to make positive change in your life!
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks is an exciting company to work for. They are truly taking things to the next level with having hybrid online/in-person therapists available, having medical professionals on staff for patients who need medication-management, and featuring an extensive support network that a client can access at any time with their laptop or phone.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In the first session, there will be a bit more "housekeeping" (as I like to call it) than a normal session. I will clarify some Thriveworks policies with you and make sure that we are all on the same page. After that, I want to hear about what brings you to see me; your challenges, your struggles, and your point of view. But I also want to hear about your goals, your strengths, and what keeps you going.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
One of my faculty mentors back when I was in graduate school told me that the most important things to accomplish in the first session is to instill a sense of hope. I want my patients to know that they are being heard, that they are being understood, and that things can get better!
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I would just want all my clients to know that I will meet them where they are at, and that they can be honest with me about anything.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love listening to music, going to local shows and concerts, and hearing new bands. I play guitar as well, so music has always been a big part of my life. I listen to and enjoy a lot of different genres of music: classical, jazz, hip hop, blues, old school county, rock and roll, metal, and everything in between! I like playing video games to give my mind a break. Some of my favorites are Starcraft (1 and 2), the Fallout Series, Skyrim, the Bioshock series, and Stardew Valley.
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My sense of humor and my compassion for others.
