Get to know Talisah

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

My interest in becoming a counselor was influenced by my work with adolescents in the foster care system. I saw firsthand how resilient adolescents and teens can be even when faced with some of life's most difficult challenges. I wanted not only to witness clients flourish but be a part of their journey and help in any way I could.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I enjoy working with different populations. I have worked with adolescents, teens, young adults, and mature adults. I find that I work best with clients (any age) that are motivated to achieve their goals and willing to accept feedback and support.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish that all clients knew that just because you have a mental health condition doesn't mean that you have to be defined by it. You are NOT your diagnosis. You are a person first and all people deserve the chance to be seen, heard, and understood.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I chose to work with Thriveworks because I wanted the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment where the relationship between the therapist and client is the first priority.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

During the first session, clients can expect to be introduced to a safe and protected environment where their needs come first. They can be confident that I am interested in helping them to achieve what they desire.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

By the end of the first session, I would like to have a sense of who the client is, what motivates them, what challenges them, and how I can help them to be successful in achieving their stated goals.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

I would like clients to know that I am passionate about helping people to cope with challenges. I ask questions to get a better understanding of their needs and what concerns they would like to address but I prefer to listen more than I talk. I take my work and the clients seriously but I believe that humor and laughter are important ingredients in building relationships as they can help 'break the ice' and help clients feel more comfortable.
