About Sharon
I’m Sharon Ryan, a Licensed Professional Counselor with 8 years of experience supporting children, teens, and adults through a wide range of challenges. I specialize in eating disorders, anxiety, depression, self-worth, trauma, and body image. My background includes certification as a personal trainer and bariatric counselor, and expertise in weight and body neutrality. I believe that understanding the connection between mind and body is key to lasting healing and growth.
I earned my Master’s in Professional Counseling from William Paterson University. I draw on evidence-based modalities including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, cognitive behavioral therapy, grief counseling, play therapy, and holistic approaches. My therapeutic style is client-centered, trauma-informed, and rooted in whole-person health.
I welcome clients ready to take the next step toward healing with compassion and support. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, body image, depression, trauma, or relationships, I provide a safe and nonjudgmental space to explore challenges and build resilience. Together, we’ll work toward uncovering your strengths and finding peace in daily life.

"After a critical health scare, after which I had to learn how to walk again, I knew that helping people, especially those who struggle with weight, body image, disordered eating, trauma, depression, and anxiety, was what I wanted to do."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I grew up in a household where there were conflicting views on therapy, but always believed there is no downside to seeing and opening up in a therapeutic environment. I consider myself a therapist with lived experience in many of the specialities I work with, and can offer not only the benefit of my education but of my own personal understanding of issues.
I also truly enjoy speaking with and listening to people and working with them so they can feel as authentically themselves as possible.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I enjoy working with clients who are honest and whose goals are truly to find their healthiest, happiest path in life. I am always real with my clients, and I appreciate clients who present their real selves in sessions. I like clients to feel as if they can be themselves with no judgment while they are in my care.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am always excited to work with clients who are kind and generous with others but can't seem to find the capacity to be that way with themselves! It is always wonderful to see someone who feels "less than" become a strong, beautiful, empowered human being!
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients knew that seeing a therapist is what YOU make of it. There may be times when you just need to vent, there may be times when you need to learn coping skills, there may be times when you need to do some "heavy work." All of those things are valid reasons to go to your therapist, as they add up to a bigger picture. And a therapist is there for you, to guide you in your recovery, and work with you, alongside you.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I worked at Thriveworks previously, then left to pursue more intensive training in some of my specializations. I enjoyed working at Thriveworks so much that I am returning with a wider knowledge base and hope to be able to do an amazing job for the company.
What inspires you?
People who have been through struggles in their lives, and who are still standing, inspire me every day. They say that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and there are many days when people may be like - ok! that's enough! But I am always inspired about the human experience, and how amazing it is what people can go through and not only survive but thrive.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In our first session, we will get to know more about each other. There will be history taking, including the reason a client is coming to therapy and possibly what their goals are.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
Building a therapeutic alliance, seeing if we "fit", is my main goal in a first session
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I would like clients to know that I am non-judgmental, and there is no downside to complete honesty in a session with me. And that everything said is confidential, unless it pertains to harming yourself or another person. Clients should come prepared to just be who they are, and the session will continue from there. Also, if the client doesn't feel like it's a good fit, that's ok too.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love to go to the gym, lift weights, read, kickbox, and spend sunny days on the beach! I also enjoy cooking and coming up with new and fun recipes.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I believe that life throws you curve balls and it's how you react that defines how you will proceed. I also believe that when you go forward in life with a positive attitude, it changes the way everything looks and feels. I also believe in being your authentic self, whether or not it's "approved" by the masses.
