About Nahshira
Hi, I'm Nahshira McKay, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 10 years of experience supporting individuals, couples, and families. I work with clients navigating identity, relationship concerns, emotional regulation, and life transitions, and I strive to create a space where you can show up as your full, authentic self—without fear of judgment. I earned my Master of Social Work from Rutgers University. Working with diverse populations facing anxiety, depression, trauma, and co-occurring challenges has shaped my ability to meet you where you are—whether you're overwhelmed, stuck, or looking for support, clarity, and growth.
My approach is warm, collaborative, and strengths-based. I believe you already have the capacity for change, and my role is to help you tap into those strengths while building practical tools along the way. I incorporate evidence-based practices like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), tailored to your unique needs.
I'm especially passionate about working with individuals exploring their identity, as well as couples and families who want to improve communication, rebuild trust, and strengthen their connections. My goal is to help you feel heard, supported, and empowered to create meaningful, lasting change in your life.

"I understand how isolating it can feel to navigate life’s challenges without support, which is why I’m passionate about creating a space where you feel seen, heard and understood. "

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I became a social worker after recognizing the lack of access to mental health resources in my community growing up, along with the stigma that often prevented individuals from seeking support. Those experiences shaped my passion for increasing awareness, breaking down barriers, and creating spaces where people feel comfortable prioritizing their mental health. I am committed to educating and empowering others with the tools and skills needed to manage life’s challenges and build healthier, more fulfilling lifestyles.
What types of clients do you work best with?
Young adults, couples and families.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
One thing I wish all clients knew is that even though life can feel overwhelming at times, you are not alone in your experiences. With the right coping skills and support, challenges can become more manageable, and meaningful change is possible.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
In our first session, you can expect a supportive and comfortable space where we begin building rapport and getting to know each other. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you to therapy, your goals, and what you hope to gain from the process. In the early stages, we’ll work collaboratively to create a personalized roadmap toward a healthier, more balanced life.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
My practice is guided by both my personal experiences and core values, including integrity, gratitude, support, openmindedness, personal growth, kindness, and self-compassion. These values shape how I show up for my clients—creating a space that is genuine, non-judgmental, and centered on growth. I believe in meeting clients where they are while encouraging reflection, resilience, and meaningful change.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
I tailor therapy by meeting each client where they are and building on their individual strengths. Everyone’s experiences and needs are different, so I take a personalized approach—collaborating with clients to identify what works best for them while supporting their growth at a pace that feels comfortable and realistic.
