About Laurie
I am Laurie Engel, a dually licensed therapist and clinical leader with over 25 years of experience helping individuals and couples. My background bridges advanced clinical psychology and social work, including specialized training in CBT from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. I work with adults and couples navigating mood disorders, anxiety, acute relationship stress, and complex life adjustments. I also offer dedicated, expert care for the loved ones of individuals struggling with substance use disorders, as well as those managing grief, loss, and chronic medical issues.
My therapeutic approach blends evidence-based science with authentic warmth. We will use structured frameworks like CBT and Motivational Interviewing to break negative patterns, but also humor and shared laughter to lighten heavy spaces and build resilience. I look at you as a whole person, not a diagnosis, and tailor every session to your unique rh

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I chose this field because I have always been deeply drawn to psychology and understanding the brain. I wanted a career where I could apply that knowledge to help individuals build the vital skills needed to navigate life's challenges.
What types of clients do you work best with?
My sessions are best suited for individuals and couples who want an active, conversational therapist rather than just a silent listener. Clients work best with me when they are ready to build practical, real-world coping skills. You can expect a highly supportive but structured environment where we combine proven therapeutic techniques with a down-to-earth approach, ensuring every session is customized entirely to your individual goals.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
I wish all clients knew that healing is an active, collaborative process, and that they are a whole person, not a diagnosis. Therapy isn't about being fixed by an expert; it is about building a trusted partnership where you can safely develop the practical coping skills and resilience needed to navigate life's challenges on your own terms.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
In our first session, our main goal is to help you feel comfortable, safe, and heard as we begin building an exceptional foundation of longterm trust. We will discuss what brings you to therapy, what you hope to achieve, and how we can best work together. In the early stages, our focus will be entirely collaborative—taking a look at your life as a whole person, not a diagnosis, so we can begin mapping out the practical coping skills that match your specific goals.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
My work is really guided by patience and an authentic understanding of how hard change can be. I know that growth doesn’t happen overnight; people naturally step forward and backward, and falling back into old patterns is just part of the process. I focus on being a steady, patient ally so we can figure out those setbacks together, figure out what works for you, and keep moving forward without any judgment.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
I start by letting you take the lead on what we focus on each week, rather than forcing you into a set curriculum. We will regularly check in to see what parts of our sessions are actually helping and what isn't working for you. By paying attention to the real-world timing of your life, we can adjust our focus dynamically—whether that means slowing down during an overwhelming week or accelerating when you feel ready to tackle a big change.
