I’m Jimmy Passe, a career mental health professional. I earned my bachelor’s in psychology, Cum Laude, from Bloomfield College in 2008, a master’s in professional counseling in 2011, and my doctorate in Counseling and Supervision at Kean University. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC), and Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) in New Jersey with over 17 years of experience. I have worked with teenagers to seniors with grief, end of life issues, addiction, ADHD, relationship issues, codependency, depression, anxiety, personality disorders, anger management, and self-esteem.
I use evidence-based therapies and techniques in Motivational Interviewing (MI), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I also incorporate client-centered and strength-based approaches to help and empower clients, so that they can improve their quality of life.
Starting a therapeutic journey can feel daunting and uncertain. However, you are not alone and I want to let you know that you are courageous. If you are in need of support from a compassionate mental health clinician, I invite you to schedule an appointment to begin your treatment process.
"As a Black mental health professional, my lived experience enables me to provide compassionate care through a multicultural lens."
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
Growing up, I learned that the feelings that I felt were not always my own. Empathy comes naturally to me which enabled me to grow into a helping professional. As a mental health counselor, I found a career that has granted me the opportunity to help others in meaningful ways using evidenced based approaches.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I work best with adults ranging from ages 18 - 45 struggling with anxiety, mood disorders, ADHD, addiction, men's issues, intimate partner/relationship issues, grief, and codependency.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
The therapeutic process will challenge you in ways that will help you realize your true potential and agency when it comes to achieving your mental health goals.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
Clients can expect warmth, compassion, and an opportunity to have a conversation about their needs and expectations during their first appointment. Additionally, it will be an opportunity for clients to learn about my role in their treatment process. During the initial phase of therapy, I will assist my clients with developing their treatment plan goals and begin engaging them in a therapeutic work which will consists of building rapport, psychoeducation, reviewing coping skills, and enhancing our therapeutic alliance.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
I value respect, transparency, humility, kindness, meaningful bonds, and integrity. These values enable me to build rapport with my clients while providing compassionate care for my clients during their therapeutic experience.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
I listen and partner with my clients using client-centered approaches to create a therapeutic space to meet their unique needs.
